As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the current market frenzy for pre-owned copies of Deadpool is nothing short of baffling. Having played and reviewed countless games over the years, I’ve come to appreciate quality gameplay, compelling narratives, and solid mechanics. Unfortunately, the Deadpool game, despite its initial charm, falls short in those areas.
Enthusiasts of the Activision Deadpool video game are posting previously owned copies for sale at inflated prices, with one reaching nearly $50,000. This surge in value can be attributed to the renewed interest in Deadpool following the premiere of the Marvel film Deadpool and Wolverine.
Originally launched in 2013 on PS3, Xbox 360, and PC platforms, the “Deadpool” game was developed by High Moon Studios and Activision. In 2015, an upgraded version was released for the newer PS4 and Xbox One consoles. However, due to the typical short lifespan of licensed games, the “Deadpool” game was removed from digital stores in 2017, making it hard to find for purchase. As a result, those interested can only obtain a copy through leftover stock or second-hand listings. Regrettably, these pre-owned copies are currently being sold at inflated prices.
Due to the tremendous popularity and achievement of characters like Deadpool and Wolverine, the cost for physical PS4 versions of the Deadpool game has skyrocketed. In a mere two weeks, the game’s worth escalated from a maximum of $140 to an astonishing £38,374 ($49,004 USD). This exorbitant price tag for a PS4 copy of the game was attached to a now-removed eBay UK listing. The seller justified this high price by stating it was aimed at wealthy Deadpool fans eager to demonstrate their affection for the character. However, it’s extremely unlikely that even the wealthiest gamers would be tempted to spend such a large sum on a secondhand video game, which could explain why the listing was taken down.
Deadpool Game Prices Are Seeing Huge Spikes in Value, But Likely Not for Long
Additionally, despite high expectations, the Deadpool game didn’t quite meet the mark in terms of critical acclaim given its steep price tag. With a median critic score of 62 on Metacritic, reviewers appreciated the clever writing and humor in the game’s script, but found its hack-and-slash mechanics and level design outdated. Although Deadpool shared some similarities with other superhero games from that time, the emergence of the Batman: Arkham series significantly changed the genre, raising the bar for quality that the Deadpool game ultimately failed to reach.
Consequently, the surge in prices for the Deadpool video game is probably capitalizing on the excitement from the Marvel film. It’s advisable to wait until prices decrease to a fairer level before making a purchase. As for a new Deadpool game, it’s uncertain if Marvel Games has considered this, but given the character’s increased popularity, it could be an opportune moment for them to start developing one.
