Summary
- Ryan Reynolds is developing a Deadpool and X-Men film, with Deadpool playing a supporting role.
- The specific X-Men characters and details of the project are still undisclosed and not yet pitched to Marvel.
- The proposed Deadpool and X-Men project would be separate from the X-Men reboot and remains in early development.
Despite only being about a year old, plans for another “Deadpool and X-Men” film are already percolating. One potential plot, centered around several X-Men mutants, is currently in development, and it’s this very character – Deadpool himself – who has proposed the concept.
In 2024, the combined box office revenue of Deadpool and Wolverine amounted to $1.34 billion, making it the second highest grossing film of the year and a record for R-rated movies. However, they had previously shared the limelight on the big screen, with the 2009 movie “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” being their first joint appearance. Unfortunately, this film depicted a distorted version of Wade Wilson, featuring a sewn mouth and laser eyes. After Disney’s acquisition of Fox ten years later, all X-Men characters became available for Kevin Feige to incorporate into his Marvel Cinematic Universe. The success of Deadpool and Wolverine seems to have sparked further interest in creating more Deadpool and X-Men focused films.
Ryan Reynolds Is In The Early Stages Of Working On A Deadpool And X-Men Film
It’s Yet To Be Officially Pitched To Marvel Studios, Though
Based on information from The Hollywood Reporter, actor Ryan Reynolds, known for his role as Deadpool (Wade Wilson), is considering various concepts for a yet-to-be-named Deadpool and X-Men film. Unlike past movies, Deadpool would step back to become more of a supporting character while three or four X-Men characters take center stage. The details about the characters involved have not been revealed as the idea is still in its early stages and has yet to be pitched to Marvel Studios. It’s also important to note that this project is intended to be distinct from the X-Men reboot being written by Michael Lesslie, which isn’t expected to premiere before Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027.
As a die-hard Deadpool fan and someone who’s had the privilege of contributing to the scriptwriting of past Deadpool movies, it’s clear that Ryan Reynolds is deeply committed to his character’s quest for significance. Predicting which X-Men characters Reynolds might choose to collaborate with at this stage is an impossible task. With a massive mutant roster, many of whom are yet to make their live-action debut, any definitive lineup remains nothing more than speculation. However, some names do stand out. Sir Ian McKellen’s Magneto, Channing Tatum’s long-awaited Gambit, and Dafne Keen’s X-23 seem like strong possibilities, especially given that McKellen and Tatum are among the six mutants confirmed to appear in Avengers: Doomsday as part of a multiverse-driven cast. Of course, any such plans hinge on Kevin Feige acknowledging Reynolds’ preferences, a decision that could depend on the success of Leslie’s X-Men reboot.
At present, it seems that a collaboration between Deadpool and X-Men might need to wait since Ryan Reynolds is currently busy writing the script for Paramount’s upcoming comedy film titled Boy Band. This project will bring him together with his colleagues from Deadpool and Wolverine, specifically Shawn Levy, who will direct, and Hugh Jackman who will co-star. Meanwhile, Feige is concentrating on sustaining the momentum behind Thunderbolts, which was released in cinemas on Friday and has already garnered positive reactions as one of the strongest entries within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Moreover, it’s hoping for an unexpectedly successful commercial run.
