As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of comic book-inspired gaming under my belt, I can confidently say that the latest Marvel mashup, Deadpool and Wolverine, was an absolute joyride. The movie’s cameo-rich narrative, reminiscent of a popcorn vending machine dispensing delightful surprises, has set a high bar for future Marvel games, particularly Insomniac’s upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine.

The team-up between Deadpool and Wolverine was a blast, though it may not have taken the Marvel Cinematic Universe to unprecedented heights. One of the standout aspects of this adventure – and arguably its most talked-about feature – was the abundance of cameos. From well-known stars and comic book characters to familiar faces from Fox’s Marvel universe, these appearances added a layer of excitement that is bound to be missed as Insomniac’s game forges its unique path. It’s inevitable that some fans will draw comparisons between this upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine title and the recent MCU film.

Apart from the reveal trailer for Marvel’s Wolverine in 2021, no formal updates have been shared about the project. Starting off the intense and rapid-fire second half of the film featuring Deadpool and Wolverine, the montage of various Wolverines remains a standout aspect of the R-rated Marvel Cinematic Universe movie even weeks after its premiere. Once realizing he needs to locate a new Wolverine following the demise of his own universe’s version, Wade Wilson embarks on a chaotic journey across multiple realities. During this frenzied adventure, he encounters numerous Wolverine counterparts that are either utilized for comic relief, nod to classic comic book storylines, or both.

This montage sees Deadpool encounter an Old Man Logan variant, a comic-accurate 5ft 3 Wolverine, Logan’s high-flying alter-ego Patch, a one-armed Wolverine ripped straight from the Age of Apocalypse run, a classic brown and yellow-suited Wolverine, a crucified Wolverine that references the striking cover of Uncanny X-Men #251, and most impressive of them all, a Wolverine variant that’s played by ex-Superman, ex-Witcher star Henry Cavill. The speed at which these cameos are delivered, the clear reverence for the source material, and the star power of Cavill make this montage a clear highlight of Deadpool and Wolverine, and it could put quite a bit of pressure on Marvel’s Wolverine.

Marvel’s Wolverine Should Reference as Many Variants as Possible

In contrast to Spider-Man’s extensive comic book background being frequently honored through movies like “Into the Spider-Verse” and games such as Insomniac’s “Spider-Man“, which subtly incorporate various iterations of Peter Parker and Miles Morales via alternate costumes, Wolverine seldom receives similar treatment. Over the years, a single version of Wolverine has dominated pop culture, making the “Deadpool and Wolverine” variant montage a delight because it exposed mainstream viewers to numerous new interpretations of Logan.

For those struggling with sleep, it’d be terrific if they could carry on their enthusiasm for Marvel’s Wolverine.
