Death Note: 7 Times Light Almost Got Caught

Many consider Death Note to be one of the greatest anime series ever made, largely due to its thrilling mental duels. These aren’t simple victories; Light Yagami’s successes against opponents like the FBI and L were often balanced by near misses, whether caused by his own mistakes or L’s brilliance. Light never forgot how close he came to being caught, as evidenced by several close calls before his final confrontation in the warehouse.

Despite facing several close calls, Light never lost confidence in himself or his goal of enacting justice as Kira, though these experiences definitely shook him up. Throughout the story, Light was repeatedly reminded that he wasn’t the only brilliant strategist and couldn’t underestimate his opponents, L, Mello, or Near. Importantly, these near-defeats drove some of the most exciting plot twists in Death Note, like the introduction of new allies for Light or unexpected strategies from his enemies.

Raye Penber Was Assigned to Investigate Light

Light Had Faith Light Was Innocent, However

It’s ironic that Light Yagami, despite being incredibly intelligent, frequently drew unnecessary attention to himself in the anime Death Note, which actually made him a bigger target for L. A good example of this happens early on when L sends the FBI to investigate the Kira case. Detective Raye Penber specifically begins watching Light and his family. Just as Raye is about to rule Light out as a suspect, Light unexpectedly makes a move, raising suspicion all over again.

Light, even though it wasn’t necessary, cleverly faked a bus hijacking to manipulate Raye into doing what he wanted. While this allowed Light to get Raye’s name and maintain control, it also drew unwanted attention to himself. This ultimately made him a suspect in the eyes of Naomi Misora, who found the timing of the hijacking suspiciously convenient.

Naomi Misora Almost Zeroed in on Light as Kira

Light Had to Act Fast to Escape His Doom

Light almost got caught during this part of the Death Note story, and it happened in two stages. First, he hijacked a bus, which immediately drew unwanted attention. This was followed by him killing Raye Penber and the other FBI agents. Naturally, Naomi Misora, a skilled investigator, noticed what was happening. Despite being devastated by the recent death of her fiancé, she quickly focused on solving the case.

Light unexpectedly encountered Naomi on New Year’s Day, right as she was preparing to share her investigation with the Japanese police. Realizing he was in danger, Light did everything he could to prevent Naomi from reaching police headquarters. It was then that he learned her name and wrote it in the Death Note, though her use of a false identity almost ruined his plan. Light had underestimated Naomi, failing to consider that someone investigating Kira would likely use a fake name to protect themselves.

Light Found Cameras and Bugs in His Room

Light Ate Potato Chips to Evade Capture

I watched as L, determined to win at all costs – much like the brilliant but headstrong Light Yagami – really upped the ante after Naomi Misora died. He secretly installed cameras and listening devices in both the Yagami and Kitamura homes. It seemed like a perfect trap; Light could have easily been caught using the Death Note in his own bedroom, proving he was Kira. But Light was clever and managed to avoid that fate with a surprising move.

Light had prepared hidden alarms on his bedroom door to detect anyone entering and even to assess their expertise – whether it was a skilled investigator. The evidence suggested a professional detective had been inside, leading Light to correctly believe his room was under surveillance. He relied on Ryuk to locate the cameras, allowing him to discreetly eliminate criminals and manipulate how L perceived the events.

Light Turned Himself In After Misa’s Sudden Capture

Light Spent Weeks in Confinement Alongside Misa

Light came closest to being caught when his admirer, Misa Amane, was arrested under suspicion of being the second Kira. Light was stunned when L seized Misa’s phone, cutting off their communication, and then told him about her arrest. Immediately after, Rem strongly urged Light to save Misa, no matter what. Light devised a risky plan to control the situation: he intentionally allowed himself to be captured, but with a specific strategy in mind.

Light crafted his most elaborate scheme in Death Note, carefully preparing everything before turning himself in to L’s team. He acted convincingly, presenting himself as a remorseful citizen instead of Kira, and then the surveillance began. Initially, L suspected both Light and Misa, but Light’s plan unfolded when Kyosuke Higuchi started committing crimes as Kira, seemingly proving Light’s innocence.

L Figured Out How the Death Note Worked

L Pieced Together Light’s Potato Chip Trick in Particular

Following Higuchi’s arrest and unexpected death, Light prompted Misa to resume her killings as Kira, hoping to draw L’s focus back to them. It was a dangerous plan, as Light couldn’t be sure Rem, the supernatural being, would behave as he needed her to. However, the risk paid off. Driven by her protective instincts towards Misa, Rem wrote L and Watari’s names in her Death Note, just as L was on the verge of confirming Light as Kira.

L made significant progress in his investigation thanks to Higuchi’s notebook. Despite Rem’s attempts to be careful, L was starting to strongly suspect Light was Kira all along. He even figured out Light could have hidden pieces of the notebook inside a potato chip bag – a discovery that nearly led to Light’s arrest as Kira.

Mello Pressured Soichiro Into Revealing the New L

Matsuda Took the Fall to Protect Light

The manga version of Death Note showed some close calls for Light that weren’t included in the anime. For instance, after Mello obtained a Death Note, he used its power to gain an advantage over Light’s investigation team. He mainly did this by making threatening phone calls directly to Soichiro, even demanding to know the name of the new L.

Light realized Mello had figured out the current Kira was a fake, and Soichiro was trapped, as Sayu’s life was at risk. Light faced certain defeat, or possibly escape if Sayu was sacrificed – but then Matsuda intervened. As he often did, Matsuda unexpectedly altered the situation with a bold, unplanned move. He volunteered his name as the new L, and surprisingly, both he and Light successfully tricked Mello.

Aizawa Started Investigating Light After the New York City Debacle

Misa Almost Became Light’s Biggest Liability

Light was already struggling with his battles against Mello and Near, but the situation became much more difficult when Aizawa seemingly turned against him. Light’s attempt to eliminate Near’s investigative team in New York failed, leaving him dangerously exposed. It became increasingly obvious that Light Yagami, L, and Kira were all one and the same, and both Near and Aizawa were uncovering parts of this truth. Near had already developed strong suspicions, and Aizawa’s discoveries only added to them.

Light was upset, but not shocked, when Aizawa announced he would reinvestigate him, with Mogi assisting. Light realized he’d been close to getting caught – if he hadn’t acted quickly, Aizawa and Mogi would have discovered the truth when they questioned Misa next. He’d just managed to convince Misa to relinquish her Death Note and destroy any proof of her involvement as Kira. As a result, Aizawa and Mogi were left with nothing when they arrived at Misa’s door, as she had no memory of her time as Kira.
