As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but appreciate the thoughtful update Grounding Inc has rolled out for Death Note: Killer Within. This social deduction game has always been a bit of a rollercoaster, and losing a player mid-game was often like pulling the emergency brake on that rollercoaster – not fun.
In some instances, it’s essential for a player to depart, and there could be various reasons like tending to a pet or chores. It’s not always clear from the virtual arena. Regardless of the game being played, having an alternative strategy when someone disconnects is crucial.
In general, many games can carry on as usual even if one team is short a player. Finding a replacement isn’t a major issue for most games. However, Death Note: Killer Within isn’t your typical game. It’s a social deduction game where each participant has a unique role to fulfill.
Historically, when a player dropped out, it signaled the conclusion of the game for everyone else, causing frustration all around. However, a recent update has been designed to address this problem and largely succeeds in doing so. Now, the departure of L, Kira, a follower of Kira, or the host will be the only instances triggering a mass disconnection.
In games such as Death Note: Killer within, alterations of this nature don’t typically occur without some form of repercussion. Therefore, the latest update on Steam explains the game’s behavior when a non-critical player is eliminated.
As far as the Action Phase is concerned, the changes are explained as follows:
As a dedicated fan, I want to share that if any player other than “Kira,” “Kira Follower,” or “L” unexpectedly disconnects from the game, their on-screen character won’t linger in the stage. In case a player disconnects during their demise, it’ll be handled just like when a viewer exits the room. The deceased player’s body and parting message will persist on the stage as a reminder of their presence.
And, for the Meeting Phase:
Players who disconnect without voting will be forced to skip voting.
L cannot choose to confiscate items from players who disconnect after the vote.
Will there remain leftover annoyances among tougher players who quit, absolutely. Could Grounding Inc developers find ways to alleviate this issue? Possibly. In fact, many games have had to implement a ‘player transition’ system due to similar challenges. However, addressing in-game roles can add an extra layer of complexity to these solutions.
It’s been established that the game’s modifications extend further than expected. Notably, as reported by Gameranx, the developers plan to take action against players exploiting the disconnect problem to irritate others.
Regardless of how much this issue improves, it will be a refreshing update. Moreover, according to developers, there are more improvements coming to the game. The community adores Killer Within, and if these changes prove successful, their affection for it is likely to grow even stronger in the upcoming months.
Death Note: Killer Within 2025 Content Updates
At Grounding Inc, the development team has exciting plans that will carry on with updates all the way up to 2025. They recently shared a sneak peek about these updates on X, giving gamers a glimpse of what lies ahead.
Additional personalization features, high-end character models, and a fresh role – elements yet to be officially unveiled. Given that the game is merely a few weeks old, it’s reasonable to assume that some aspects might require extra development time before they are ready to serve.
There seems to be conjecture suggesting this new character might take over from L, but exactly how this will influence the gameplay remains unclear. Yet, isn’t it part of the fun in a deductive game to solve the puzzle pieces as they come together?
