This article contains possible spoilers for Death Stranding 2.
The ESRB rating for “Death Stranding 2: On the Beach” has surfaced online weeks before its scheduled release. This sequel to Hideo Kojima’s post-apocalyptic action-adventure continues the story from the original, with Sam Porter Bridges and Fragile joining forces once more to reunite the world via their organization, Drawbridge. “Death Stranding 2” is expected to unveil fresh characters and mechanics, and there are hints that it could be the final installment in this emerging series.
The sequel to Death Stranding, titled Death Stranding 2, is set to release on PlayStation 5 on June 26, leaving a few more weeks for further details about the game to be unveiled before its store launch. Notably, creator Hideo Kojima himself will make an appearance at Summer Game Fest 2025, happening later this week, and a dedicated Death Stranding 2 Game Premiere event is scheduled for June 8. At this event, Kojima will be joined by some notable guests, and live gameplay footage of Death Stranding 2 will be shown.
In the interim, enthusiasts now have a more distinct idea about what’s in store for “Death Stranding 2: On the Beach,” as it has been given an official rating by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB). The ESRB website indicates that “Death Stranding 2” is classified as “Mature” (M), with the explanation text citing Blood and Gore, Partial Nudity, Strong Language, and Violence as the basis for this mature rating.
Death Stranding 2 Gets M Rating Ahead of Release
The ESRB’s breakdown for the game “Death Stranding 2” provides more insight into its rating, explaining that players will encounter various enemies including humans, robots, and spectral entities – possibly reminiscent of the tar-like BTs from the original game. In combat, Sam can utilize melee weapons like a “battle guitar” and firearms, employing stealth takedowns to eliminate adversaries. Scenes outside of combat appear to depict violent acts such as a man losing his limbs due to a robotic samurai, another being engulfed in flames, and a man being bisected by a massive machine.

The classifications given by ESRB for Death Stranding and its Director’s Cut edition may not be unexpected, as they received M ratings based on comparable reasons. It is possible that Death Stranding 2 could mark the conclusion of the main series, but there’s a live-action movie based on Death Stranding in development at A24, and an anime adaptation has also been confirmed recently. Hideo Kojima and Kojima Productions are part of both projects for these upcoming Death Stranding spin-offs.
