In spite of the initial game causing a bit of controversy, Hideo Kojima’s “Death Stranding 2: On the Beach” is rapidly gaining momentum as one of the most eagerly awaited games in 2025. The buzz around this project has been reignited and amplified due to the recent, captivating pre-order trailer. This trailer showcases several intriguing possibilities, such as kaiju-like beasts, a romantic connection between Sam and Fragile, and indeed, certain elements reminiscent of “Metal Gear”.
As I delved into the intricate dialogue of this upcoming game, two phrases caught my eye: “A fractured world, mended, with a few sticks to motivate,” and “The harder we try to bind people together, the more crucial those sticks become.” Kojima’s fondness for using ‘sticks’ as a symbol of violence, and ‘ropes’ as symbols of unity, is no secret. In this new game, it seems he’s drawing parallels with America’s gun culture, subtly weaving it into the narrative of Death Stranding 2’s antagonistic force.
From a storytelling perspective, these lines are clear as day. But they could also significantly impact the gameplay mechanics, adding an extra layer of depth to the gaming experience.
Why Death Stranding 2’s ‘Stick’ References Suggest Significant Combat Improvements
How Combat Functions in Death Stranding 1
In the original “Death Stranding”, the emphasis is largely placed on reducing combat. Despite players having access to various combat resources, engaging in direct fights with enemies, especially head-on, is discouraged. This is because the protagonist, Sam, is quite weak and killing enemies results in their corpses needing to be delivered to an incinerator, a process that’s both disruptive and inconvenient. In summary, combat encounters in “Death Stranding” are intended to be infrequent and brief. However, it’s possible that this could change in “Death Stranding 2”.
In Death Stranding 1, Lindsay Wagner, who played Bridget Strand, initially hesitated to take on the role because she viewed video games as primarily violent. However, Hideo Kojima persuaded her by using a metaphor involving a stick-rope, which eventually led her to accept the part. Notably, Wagner will not be present in Death Stranding 2.
Death Stranding 2: Trading In a Rope for a Stick
Last year during the Game Awards, we caught a glimpse of Death Stranding 2’s trailer featuring the bizarre resurrection of Higgs, who playfully commented on Sam exchanging his rope for a stick in reference to his gun. This hint suggests that combat might play a more significant role in Death Stranding 2, but it seems this aspect and previous mentions may mainly influence the game’s narrative. Essentially, the story will delve into escalating tensions between different factions due to conflicts arising from building the UCA. The narrative offers immense potential, yet it doesn’t necessarily imply drastic modifications to the combat mechanics of the original Death Stranding. As a fan, I can hardly wait to explore this rich and intriguing world!
Given Kojima Productions’ past work, it seems reasonable to expect that story choices in Death Stranding 2 could impact gameplay significantly. So far, we haven’t had an extensive look at the game mechanics, but the latest trailers suggest some modifications, such as vehicle combat and enhanced mobility during battles.
In addition to its interpretable aspects, it’s intriguing to consider how Death Stranding 2 might explore and expand upon the core themes that define its IP, particularly those revolving around peace and conflict avoidance. Given the potential inclusion of combat elements in the sequel, these themes could take on a new dimension. The original Death Stranding was not pacifistic by any means, which is what made the pursuit of nonviolence so impactful. However, with Lou apparently absent and the stakes higher than ever before, Death Stranding 2 might offer insightful commentary on the usefulness, essence, and repercussions of violence. This exploration could be amplified through gameplay, making for a thought-provoking experience.
