Death Stranding 2 Is Already Making One Thing Clear About Sam

The following contains spoilers for Death Stranding.

As a gamer eagerly waiting for “Death Stranding 2: On the Beach”, I can’t help but feel the anticipation building, knowing that the end of the wait is almost here. Luckily, the journey to its release has been filled with lengthy, informative trailers about the sequel and some recent hands-on previews delving deeper into the gameplay, pacing, and world of Death Stranding 2. Although the storyline remains shrouded in mystery, the previews for Death Stranding 2 have subtly unveiled a different aspect of Sam’s character than what we initially encountered in the first game.

For individuals familiar with the original “Death Stranding,” it’s reasonable to anticipate that Sam would have undergone significant changes in the sequel. However, the manner in which Sam appears at the start of “Death Stranding 2” is what truly highlights his character transformation. Based on the latest previews available, certain assumptions can be drawn about Sam, particularly in contrast to his persona in the first game. These evolutions inevitably influence the narrative flow and pace of “Death Stranding 2,” a fact that is not surprising given their significance.

Sam Isn’t Carrying the Same Weight in Death Stranding 2

Sam Has Gone From Being Broken to Being Balanced

In the game Death Stranding, Sam Bridges wasn’t merely separated from others physically, but his emotional state was just as isolated. Haunted by the loss of his wife and unborn child, encumbered by his DOOMS powers, and afflicted with Aphenphosmphobia (fear of physical touch), Sam adhered to one principle in life: shun connections whenever possible. In a sense, his role as a courier mirrored the internal world he inhabited, since it demanded constant travel, continuous burden-bearing, and maintaining distance from others.

In Death Stranding, even his alliance with Fragile, as well as his exchanges with Deadman, Heartman, and Mama, were primarily driven by necessity rather than deep connection. For most of the game, Lou, the Bridge Baby Sam carried, was the one who started to breach that emotional barrier. However, Sam, being a man who was largely evading pain and masking himself behind his responsibilities, continued to do so for much of the storyline. But, Death Stranding 2 hints at significant development in those aspects where Sam previously faced challenges.

In the game Death Stranding, Sam Bridges wasn’t merely separated from others physically, but he also seemed to be cut off emotionally from them, much like a lonely soul in isolation.

Based on initial glimpses of Death Stranding 2, Sam appears to be residing peacefully in Mexico with Lou and nurturing her as well as he can. This is a significant departure from his solitary existence in the first game, as well as his former unapproachable persona. He now seems to have discovered a tranquility he lacked previously, though part of this change can be attributed to certain revelations that transpired towards the end of Death Stranding’s narrative. This transformation in Sam’s character is worthy of attention.

Sam Chooses His Mission in DS2 Rather Than Inheriting It

Sam’s behavior towards Fragile when she seeks his assistance also reflects this change. While he might secretly desire to continue his peaceful life in Mexico with Lou in Death Stranding 2, Fragile eventually calls for his aid and he responds. Unlike the first Death Stranding where Sam felt obligated or saw it as a means to hide his emotions while saving America, this time around, Sam actively decides to help. This transition signifies a change in Sam’s character, moving from being burdened by circumstances to becoming self-reliant and strong.

Essentially, Sam’s comeback in “Death Stranding 2” isn’t prompted by pain or obligation, but by an unyielding force that eclipses any weight he previously bore. The scenes presented imply that he is no longer a man evading relationships, but someone who recognizes their importance and actively pursues them. This decision might not only affect his personal narrative this time, but could also have profound implications for the world around him.
