Death Stranding Has ‘Several Adaptations’ In Production, Kojima Reveals

As a longtime fan of Hideo Kojima and his groundbreaking work, I am absolutely thrilled to see the Death Stranding universe expanding in such exciting ways! The prospect of collaborating with visionaries like Guillermo del Toro, Nicolas Winding Refn, and George Miller is nothing short of a dream come true.

Hideo Kojima, a well-known figure in gaming, has shared that multiple adaptations of Death Stranding are underway, including a live-action, full-length film set to be released in December 2023. He mentioned he’s extending the intellectual property (IP) he created across various domains, all while working on new IP like Physint and O.D., with O.D. being developed alongside Jordan Peele.

An Entire Universe

In a recent chat with Variety, Hideo Kojima shared insights about the workings of Kojima Productions, as well as upcoming plans – both immediate and distant. He mentioned his own, preferred timetable for various projects in progress, hinting at potential collaborations with filmmakers such as Guillermo del Toro, Nicolas Winding Refn, and George Miller to bring these ambitious ventures to fruition.

During his interview, Kojima spoke about what the team is building with the Death Stranding IP:

Currently, multiple adaptations of “Death Stranding” are in progress, yet I’ve penned another story, more suitable for a film. However, due to my busy schedule, I won’t be the one to direct it.

It appears that a new movie is being developed independently from the one currently being produced alongside A24. This information surfaced in December 2023, as evidenced by Kojima’s statement:

Currently, we’re collaborating on a unique cinematic interpretation of Death Stranding. Unlike many other game-to-film adaptations, our project isn’t simply a film version of the game. Instead, it’s a creative reimagining that captures the essence and spirit of the original, offering something fresh and engaging for both fans and newcomers alike.

Our aim is to captivate both gaming enthusiasts and cinephiles alike with our movie. We’re crafting an unprecedented Death Stranding cinematic world, unlike any before it.

Numerous production studios are shifting their focus towards building expansive multimedia worlds, and Kojima Productions seems particularly suited for this transition. For a long time, Hideo Kojima has been recognized as a visionary, and the stories woven into the games he’s developed – whether at Konami or through his independent label – have been rich enough to translate seamlessly onto the big screen.
