Video game developer Fawkes has unveiled their intentions to revive the MMO title “Defiance” and make another attempt at re-launching this intellectual property in the current year. Fawkes, with its motto “Bringing life back to forgotten worlds and safeguarding their heritage,” aligns perfectly with their ongoing project to resurrect “Defiance.” In the past, Fawkes has played a significant role in reviving games like “Shaiya” and “Last Chaos,” while also maintaining ownership of “Desert Operations” and “Wargame 1942.”
Originally developed by Trion Worlds for PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360, “Defiance” was a vast MMO third-person shooter game that eventually saw a new version called “Defiance 2025” released on PC, Xbox One, and PS4. This game evolved into a transmedia project, much like the upcoming “Oz: Adventures,” as it was designed to sync with the 2013 Syfy television series of the same name. Unfortunately, this TV show was canceled in 2015. After its initial release in the same year, “Defiance” switched to a free-to-play model in 2014, but its servers were closed by owner Gamigo seven years later in 2021.
As a die-hard fan, I’m thrilled to share the exciting news that Fawkes has announced its intentions to acquire the global development and publishing rights for the beloved game, Defiance! In a heartfelt blog post, they revealed their plans to reboot this cherished title, starting with a PC relaunch in April 2025.
In their own words, “Our relaunch is a homecoming, designed for you to return to a world that holds dear memories and create new ones.” Fawkes emphasized that if the re-launch proves successful, they would consider bringing Defiance back to consoles as well.
Defiance has long been among the top free-to-play MMOs, standing alongside gaming giants like Runescape, Guild Wars 2, and Star Wars: The Old Republic. Despite the television show’s cancellation and the game’s eventual closure, Fawkes acknowledges that Defiance holds a special place in gamers’ hearts.
Fawkes Announces It’s Reviving the MMO Defiance
Fawkes expresses a genuine enthusiasm for video game ventures and their players, much like Nightdive Studios’ efforts on the remasters of games such as The Thing, Turok, and System Shock. This mirrors the developer’s goal to resurrect abandonedware games. In a bid to rekindle Defiance with the community or Ark Hunters, Fawkes stated, “We will begin modestly…implementing changes that matter while discarding those that don’t. We are eager to rebuild Defiance alongside you.” Furthermore, the company encourages fans to join the Fawkes Discord server to keep track of the revival process.
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but reminisce about my unforgettable journey as an Ark Hunter in Defiance. This game transported me into a future Earth, where humanity was at war with the alien Votans. Navigating a hostile Earth became an exhilarating adventure, filled with intense battles that solidified its status among the greatest post-apocalyptic games ever made. The San Francisco Bay Area was my playground, offering countless missions and challenges alongside fellow Ark Hunters. It was a unique experience that I will always cherish.
