Back in February, I got my hands on Delta Force – Black Hawk Down, a game developed by Team Jade and TiMi Studio Group. But let me tell you, this game has been creating quite a stir among the gaming community due to its reviews. Black Hawk Down is actually the narrative-focused spin-off of Delta Force, which resembles Battlefield and was launched in December 2024.
In simpler terms, Black Hawk Down is an additional game feature where you can play alone or with others, immersing yourself in a storyline that mirrors the real-life events of the Battle of Mogadishu in 1993, which took place in Somalia. However, some online commentators have pointed out that this mode is excessively challenging and the overall review scores are declining as a result.
Not a Good Start
Black Hawk Down initially seems engaging, but it might be a bit too demanding for some players, as suggested by the feedback from those who have started playing the free Delta Force expansion that came out on February 21st.
Among the 3,406 reviews available on Steam at the time of writing, a little over one third (around 35%) express satisfaction. Here are some of the less favorable remarks from Steam users:
From the 3,406 reviews posted on Steam, approximately 35% indicate a positive experience. Below, you’ll find some of the more critical comments shared by Steam users:
- ‘So many stupid design choices that hold back what could be a really cool, if not short, single player shooter experience.’ – Basil
- ‘Unnecessarily difficult. Played it with a 2 man crew, and the last level is basically impossible.’ – Robby301
- ‘Poorly optimized, enemies spawning right on top of you and plainly unfun to play. Feels like a chore.’ – Kurtye
Delta Force is an impressive shooter that showcases significant promise, despite having a strong resemblance (and a rather subtle one at times) to Battlefield 2042. It shares similarities in user interface, class structure, map selection, and overall gameplay experience with Electronic Arts’ latest first-person shooter installment in the renowned series. However, this isn’t inherently negative – Battlefield 2042 was critically panned, making Delta Force a viable and more favorable choice.
As an avid gamer, I’ve noticed a common gripe among players regarding the difficulty scaling in Black Hawk Down. It seems that when playing solo, the challenges remain just as intense as if I were part of a team, and the enemies appear to be thrown at me without much strategic thought. The number of players doesn’t seem to affect the game’s difficulty, which can make the experience feel unbalanced at times.
Additionally, the game’s design aims for a challenging and authentic experience. This means there are minimal (or barely any) checkpoints, a single-life system is employed, and resources like ammo and healing supplies are scarce. Contrastingly, a multiplayer shooter has a more ‘arcade-like’ feel to it.
