Democrats Push to Delay Saudi-Backed EA Buyout

A potential deal to have Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, Jared Kushner’s Affinity Partners, and Silver Lake acquire Electronic Arts might be delayed. A group of Democrats in the Labor Caucus is attempting to block the purchase, which is currently expected to be finalized in 2027.

Democratic members of the Labor Caucus wrote to Federal Trade Commission Chair Andrew Ferguson, asking him to examine the proposed acquisition.

The lawmakers expressed concern that the proposed acquisition could harm workers, reduce competition in the job market, and weaken the U.S. video game industry. In a letter, they requested a careful review of the deal to protect American jobs and ensure a fair and competitive market.

If the deal is finalized, PIF would essentially control one of the biggest video game companies in America. Lawmakers are understandably concerned about how this could affect EA’s workers.

The lawmakers also expressed worry that the deal would be funded with at least $20 billion in debt. They believe this could pressure the companies to cut costs, potentially through layoffs, moving jobs overseas, reorganizations, or even closing studios.

In 2024, Electronic Arts (EA) cut 670 jobs, and further layoffs occurred in April 2025. A purchase of this scale – especially considering the planned borrowing to finance it – might result in even more job losses.

Lawmakers worry the deal could give EA even more power over the job market, considering its already strong position in video games and its investments in other sectors.

Although the Public Investment Fund (PIF) has invested in other game developers, a stake in EA would be its biggest investment yet, likely giving it significant influence over the company’s direction and how games are made.

Saudi Arabia and the United States have very different cultural expectations. In Saudi Arabia, identifying as LGBTQ+ is a crime punishable by death under their legal system, Sharia law. It’s unclear if Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), which has invested in EA, will try to influence the content of EA’s games. This could affect studios like BioWare and Maxis – the developers of Dragon Age and The Sims, respectively – as these games often include LGBTQ+ characters and storylines.

Forty-six House Democrats signed the letter, and the Communications Workers of America (CWA) also voiced their support.
