Demon Slayer Author Confirms A Big Secret About Breathing Forms, And Fans Are Disappointed

This article contains some spoilers from Demon Slayer

Currently, “Demon Slayer” is generating a significant amount of buzz, primarily due to the latest release of its film titled “Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle Part 1 – Akaza’s Return“. As expected from a climactic story finale, the movie is packed with numerous battles. Notably, it showcases each character maximizing their unique abilities through their breathing forms. Interestingly, the creator of “Demon Slayer” has shared an intriguing revelation about this power recently.

Demon Slayer’s Main Power System is Breathing Forms and Blood Demon Art

In simpler terms, “Demon Slayer” has become one of the most popular shonen series out there, even surpassing initial predictions. This surge in popularity can be largely attributed to its anime adaptation. Similar to many battle shonen, “Demon Slayer” places significant emphasis on power structures and combat methods. It’s worth mentioning that the series excels at executing these aspects effectively.

In the realm of Demon Slayer, characters exhibit distinct combat methods and a clearly defined power structure. The protagonists wield Nichirin Swords, which enable them to master various Breathing Techniques. These techniques stem from Sun Breathing, an original method conceived by the mighty Yoriichi. On the other hand, demons primarily rely on Blood Demon Art for their abilities, each one unique to its demonic user and born out of Muzan’s blood. Interestingly, demons too can utilize Breathing Techniques, as demonstrated by Kokushibo and his Moon Breathing.

Demon Slayer Creator Reveals Breathing Forms Are Not Literal

Breathing Forms Don’t Actually Unleash Elemental Attacks

Characters in Demon Slayer exhibit captivating breathing techniques throughout the series, which fans have observed closely. Some characters, like Water Breathers, seem to expel water from their swords, while others, such as Rengoku, exhibit Fire Breathing, appearing to control and create fire with their weapons. However, it came as a surprise to many fans when the creator of Demon Slayer, Koyoharu Gotouge, disclosed that these characters do not truly manipulate real water or fire. Instead, the breathing forms are illusions that lead viewers to perceive elements.

Here’s her full statement in volume 17:

Due to the unfortunate event of his blood relatives being slain by demons, Murata-san chose to join the demon hunting group as he had no surviving kin left.

He uses the Breath of Water, but the water is so faint that you don’t see it.

In actuality, swordsmen do not launch water attacks as one might perceive. Instead, the spectators believe they witness and experience such an attack. (Koyoharu Gotouge, Demon Slayer, Volume 17)

The author’s remark has sparked debate, particularly since one of the reasons Demon Slayer gained such popularity is its visually striking breathing style attacks. It’s worth mentioning that this seemingly does not extend to demons, as characters like Kokushibo and Kaigaku appear to employ genuine moon and thunder breathing techniques.

The Demon Slayer manga came to an end back in 2020. Compared to many other series, it’s quite brief, encompassing just 205 chapters. If you’re a fan eager not to miss out and prefer the manga format, Manga Plus is where you can find it. As for the anime adaptation, there are currently 4 seasons available. You can stream all of them on Crunchyroll. The remaining portions of the series are being transformed into movies, but their release dates vary by country, so fans will need to keep an eye out for theatrical announcements in their region.
