Among the diverse cast of characters in the Demon Slayer series, there are some who have garnered a lot of affection from the fanbase. Yet, it’s important to note that there are others who are either incredibly malevolent or not as well-written, which makes them hard for many to connect with. 6. Gyokko

Gyokko is among those demons whose human existence doesn’t really stir up much pity, given that they were just as heartless and distorted even before Kibutsuji transformed them into demons. After ascending to one of his most trusted lieutenants, Upper Rank Five, Gyokko merely grew more unbearable and delusional.

Gyokko’s self-absorbed nature and insatiable hunger for human lives made him one of the most dreadful demons imaginable. Regrettably, his character lacked complexity, failing to leave a lasting impression, resulting in him being one of the least endearing characters within Demon Slayer.

5. Shinjuro Rengoku

In the past, Shinjuro held the position of the Flame Hashira. Later in life, he tied the knot with Ruka and together they welcomed two children, forming a happy family known as the Rengokus. However, their peaceful life took an unexpected turn when Ruka sadly passed away. Coincidentally, around the same time, Shinjuro discovered the Sun Breathing technique, which led to a deep-seated feeling of inadequacy that would linger for years.

The young kids are gradually stirring into activity. Just like Kyojuro, I am prepared to lay down my life for their safety, so as not to dishonor house Rengoku.

Discovering that Hinokami Kagura surpassed all other swordsmanship techniques caused Shinjuro to abandon his martial arts pursuit and succumb to alcoholism. Instead of caring for his kids, he withdrew emotionally, leaving behind a sour, embittered, and aloof man. Despite Kyojuro’s maturity that enabled him to live a productive life, he failed to receive the affection and support from his father. Shinjuro’s sense of inferiority and neglectful behavior towards his family make him an effortless character to dislike.

4. Muzan Kibutsuji

Muzan Kibutsuji has spent his life pursuing immortality with the aim of eventually shaping a world according to his whims. Along this journey, he managed to find followers ready to risk their lives for him. Regardless of their dedication, Muzan never regarded them as peers but rather utilized them as tools to advance his own ambitions.

I strongly dislike any form of transformation or alteration. Modifications in situations, physique, or feelings are all equally unsettling to me. In the majority of instances, change signifies degradation and decay. What I admire is constancy. If something remains unchanged for an infinite period, it’s at its best.

Kibutsuji showed no remorse in eliminating anyone he considered worthless, and he took extreme measures to instill fear. Even when he was a human battling a severe illness, he murdered the sole individual attempting to save him, as he lacked patience for the treatment’s effects to appear. For Muzan, self-preservation surpassed all other considerations.

3. Hantengu

The Self-Pitying Monster

In my tale, I was once known as Hantengu – a character brimming with discord and self-importance, much like a tempestuous storm. My actions were far from virtuous, often treading the line of heinousness, yet I harbored no regret or empathy for those I wronged. Instead, I viewed them as the instigators, casting blame upon their shoulders rather than my own. Even in my human life, this pattern persisted, with fingers pointed elsewhere instead of looking within.

In the Demon Slayer series, it was hardly shocking that Hantengu’s pitiful demeanor turned off most fans due to his complete lack of human qualities or redeeming traits that could be considered endearing. Among the unlikable characters in Demon Slayer, Hantengu stands out as particularly dislikeable.

Kaigaku was an orphan who had to turn to stealing and deceit for survival since he was a child. His early years were undeniably harsh and compelled him to make questionable choices, but he did find the affection and nurturing that every child requires. Gyomei Himejima took care of him, among other orphans, at his temple. Although life there wasn’t ideal, Himejima gave up everything for the happiness of the children.

Even when life knocks you down and you’re left in the dirt, losing homes, drinking impure water, or facing accusations – remember, so long as your heart keeps beating, there’s always a chance for redemption and victory. I believe in this resilience, and it drives me forward.

However, Kaigaku’s self-centered nature prevented him from recognizing Gyomei’s benevolence, and when a demon attacked the temple one night, instead of considering others, he was quick to sacrifice them for his own survival. Even after the unfortunate event, Kaigaku remained uncaring and without regret. Moreover, under the guidance of former Thunder Hashira Jigoro Kuwajima, he often mistreated Zenitsu.

Despite mastering the art of demon slaying, there was no altruistic urge within him to fight for others’ wellbeing. One fateful day, encountering Kokushibo, Kaigaku’s instinct for self-preservation surfaced, leading him to transform into a demon in order to save himself. This event triggered a chain of events that ultimately led Jigoro Kuwajima to take his own life out of regret for his disciple’s actions. However, Kaigaku showed no remorse towards his master even after his passing. Despite receiving countless acts of selfless affection and care throughout his existence, he never felt appreciative or grateful. Ironically, he eventually became his own downfall and remained largely unlikable due to his actions.

Doma was one of those characters who seemed inherently inclined towards evil since his human days. He was born with a cold heart, finding it difficult to empathize with others. Even when he witnessed his mother murder his father and then take her own life before his eyes, he didn’t feel an iota of sympathy, instead expressing annoyance at the mess of blood that had stained his room.

Doma’s psychopathic nature is so off-putting that not even other demons can tolerate him. Given his longstanding role as an evil monster in Upper Rank Two, it’s hardly unexpected that he has become one of the most dislikable characters within the Demon Slayer series.
