The “Infinity Castle” saga serves as nearly the final chapter in the “Demon Slayer” series. As the ultimate story arc will revolve around the main antagonist, Muzan Kibutsuji, consider the Infinity Castle battle as the prelude to an epic clash between demons and demon slayers – a scaled-down resemblance of “One Piece’s” Summit War.
In the upcoming storyline, as all prominent Demon Slayer Corps members are part of this narrative, a variety of Breathing Styles will be showcased. Out of the fourteen Breathing Styles recognized in Demon Slayer, only two won’t feature in the Infinity Castle arc. Thus, we can expect all other Breathing Styles to appear in the Infinity Castle arc, presented here without any specific order.
Sun Breathing
Scorching Everything It Touches
- User(s): Tanjiro Kamado
- First Appearance: Episode 19
Let’s dive into the history behind the unique Sun Breathing technique. Contrary to belief, it wasn’t extinguished with its inventor, Yoriichi Tsugikuni. Instead, it was preserved and passed down through generations within the Kamado family in the form of the Hinokami Kagura dance. As a result, only Tanjiro Kamado is equipped to wield this extraordinary breathing style.
Tanjiro has become proficient with his initial technique, Water Breathing, but during the Infinity Castle arc, he primarily employs the Sun Breathing. Although he hasn’t fully mastered the legendary Sun Breathing yet, it is potent enough to vanquish formidable demons, even one belonging to the Upper Rank of the Twelve Kizuki.
Moon Breathing
Inflicting a Thousand Cuts with Every Swing
- User(s): Kokushibo
- First Appearance: Chapter 165
Moon Breathing, originating from Sun Breathing, was created by Michikatsu Tsugikuni, elder brother to Yoriichi Tsugikuni. Unlike the destructive nature of Sun Breathing that incinerates everything it touches, Moon Breathing is focused on splitting objects into countless fragments through precise cutting techniques.
Sadly, Michikatsu was disheartened due to his inability to outshine his prodigious sibling, leading him to agree to Muzan’s proposal for power and eternal life, transforming him into Kokushibo, Upper Rank One demon. In the Infinity Castle arc, Kokushibo will serve as the chief antagonist. He is an incredibly strong demon capable of battling four Hashiras simultaneously, effortlessly overpowering them.
Stone Breathing
The Earth is Trembling with Every Attack
- User(s): Gyomei Himejima
- First Appearance: Episode 63
The unique breathing technique utilized by Gyomei Himejima, the Stone Hashira, is called Stone Breathing. Notably, he is the sole user of this style among all demon slayers. Two factors set Gyomei apart from his fellow slayers: firstly, he is visually impaired; secondly, instead of traditional nichirin swords, he wields a flail with an attached axe as his primary weapon. Remarkably, despite these limitations and differences, Gyomei Himejima is renowned for being the strongest Hashira.
In the Infinity Castle storyline, Gyomei will display the complete force of his stone-manipulating technique against Kokushibo. As an Upper Rank One demon and one of the world’s top swordsmen, Kokushibo is highly skilled, perhaps even unmatched by many. However, he is left astonished by Gyomei’s unyielding attacks that seem to carry a devastating earth-shaking power. With each form of stone breathing style, it’s as if the ground beneath them pulses with energy.
Wind Breathing
A Tornado in Every Swing
- User(s): Sanemi Shinazugawa
- First Appearance: Episode 56
The breath technique utilized by the Wind Pillar, Sanemi Shinazugawa, is called Wind Breathing. Akin to Moon Breathing, this style focuses on unleashing potent slicing assaults. However, unlike the precise incisions of Moon Breathing, Wind Breathing’s attacks are wider and less refined.
Utilizing this unique breathing technique, Sanemi is capable of unleashing powerful whirlwind assaults that simultaneously knock several opponents off their feet and slash them. During the Infinity Castle arc, he harnesses his wind power to obliterate countless lesser demons, culminating in a battle against an Upper-Rank demon.
Mist Breathing
A Silent Kill from an Unseen Place
- User(s): Muichiro Tokito
- First Appearance: Episode 47
As an observer, I’ve noticed that the breath-style of Muichiro Tokito, the Mist Hashira, differs significantly from traditional Wind Breathing. Instead of aiming for widespread destruction, reminiscent of a hurricane, his technique is more subtle and stealthy – akin to a quiet winter breeze. Unlike conventional Wind Breathing that openly reveals one’s movements, Mist Breathing obscures them, enabling a sudden, deadly strike from an unseen location. It’s like the chilling mist that silently conceals the hidden dangers in the winter landscape.
In the upcoming Infinity Castle arc, Tokito, who previously demonstrated his lethal Mist Breathing by defeating Upper-Rank Five Gyokko alone, will team up with other Hashira to confront an immensely powerful Upper Rank demon. Although his unique breathing style catches opponents off guard, he discovers that it won’t be enough to secure victory in this battle.
Water Breathing
Flow Like a River, Hit Like a Waterfall
- User(s): Giyu Tomioka; Tanjiro Kamado
- First Appearance: Episode 4
In the realm of breathings within the series, Water Breathing is among the oldest, originating from the initial Sun Breathing. It stands alongside Flame Breathing and Thunder Breathing in age and significance. This specific breathing technique embodies fluidity and adaptability. The user, with a swift and powerful strike, can release an attack as forceful as a tempestuous waterfall. They are also capable of crafting an uninterrupted sequence of attacks that overpowers like a constantly flowing river. Lastly, they can deliver a quick, painless demise, much like the softness of falling rain.
In the course of the Infinity Castle arc, there’ll be two characters capable of Water Breathing: Tanjiro Kamado and Giyu Tamioka, the Water Hashira. While Tanjiro primarily employs Sun Breathing in this storyline, he occasionally switches to Water Breathing. These two powerful Water Breathing users will join forces against a single Upper Rank demon. The synchronized display of their Water Breathing techniques, delivering relentless attacks, is an awe-inspiring spectacle indeed.
Serpent Breathing
A strike that slithers like a snake
- User(s): Obanai Iguro
- First Appearance: Episode 56
The Serpent Breathing technique is a breathing style unique to the Hashira, Obanai Iguro, resembling the Water Breathing style but with an emphasis on its fluidity, mirroring the sinuous motion of a serpent. Notably, Obanai Iguro is among the rare Hashiras who wields a specially tailored nichirin sword, featuring a twisted blade.
The distinctive sword and unusual maneuvers make it difficult to foresee or block Obanai’s attacks due to their unpredictable bending and twisting. During the Infinity Castle arc, Obanai, known as the Serpent Hashira, will engage in combat with the architect of the Infinity Castle, accompanied by the Love Hashira.
Insect Breathing
Injecting a lethal dose of venom
- User(s): Shinobu Kocho
- First Appearance: Episode 20
The breathing technique used by the Insect Hashira, Shinobu Kocho, is called Insect Breathing. Unlike other Hashira who rely on physical strength, Shinobu Kocho, a small and relatively weak woman, chooses to use lethal poison instead. Her weapon of choice is a large, needle-like nichirin sword that she wields with precision, replicating the swift stabs and thrusts of insects such as bees or mosquitoes.
In the Infinity Castle arc, Shinobu Kocho’s character is set for significant growth, unveiling her history prior to her days as a demon slayer. This journey will unfold how she eventually crosses paths with the Upper-Rank demon who seized her sister away from her. Her tale promises to be thrilling, uplifting, and deeply emotional.
Thunder Breathing
A Flashy and Electrifying Breathing Style
- User(s): Zenitsu Agatsuma; Kaigaku
- First Appearance: Episode 12
Previously discussed was Thunder Breathing – a sub-technique of Sun Breathing, similar to Flame Breathing and Water Breathing. It is unique for its focus on rapid movement and shocking power. The user, swift as lightning, can strike down demons before they grasp what’s befallen them. This breathing style also emulates thunder and lightning with a deafening roar that stuns enemies, and has the potential to paralyze or even burn them.
In the Infinity Castle storyline, you’ll find two individuals who practice Thunder Breathing technique – Zenitsu Agatsuma and Kaigaku. Both learned from the same master, but Zenitsu is a Demon Slayer, whereas Kaigaku has been promoted to the new Upper Rank Six among the Twelve Kizuki. Their exhilarating fight will undoubtedly be a standout part of this arc.
Love Breathing
A Unique yet Mesmerizing Breathing Style
- User(s): Mitsuri Kanroji
- First Appearance: Episode 49
The breathing technique employed by Mitsuri Kanroji, a member of the Love Hashira, is known as Love Breathing. This technique originates from Flame Breathing and harnesses the fierce emotions, particularly love, of its user for powerful attacks. Distinctive to Mitsuri, she wields a specially crafted nichirin sword that is long and agile. With her strong, elastic body and unique sword, Love Breathing enables Mitsuri to launch wide-ranging assaults.
The grace and might in her swordplay mirror that of a rhythmic gymnast wielding a ribbon, striking and evading foes from all angles. In the Infinity Castle saga, the Love Hashira will collaborate with the Serpent Hashira to eliminate the castle’s architect. Her flexible blade will be instrumental in targeting the Upper Rank Demon with far-reaching sight, who possesses the ability to manipulate the castle’s structure at will.
