The following contains spoilers from the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba manga and anime.
As an onlooker, I’ve witnessed the arduous existence of Demon Slayers, a life marked by profound sorrow and selfless sacrifices. The cruelties they’ve faced have molded their characters into relentless warriors against demons. Remarkably skilled even before joining the Demon Slayer Corps, the Hashira have endured immense hardships in their personal lives as well.
At the height of the struggle between righteousness and wickedness, certain valiant fighters’ hidden pain will come to light. One of these Hashira figures is expected to disclose his feelings, long-suppressed emotions he’s harbored for years due to heartaches and disappointments. However, will this revelation bring him the tranquility he seeks?
Shinazugawa Brothers and the Wound That Never Healed
Sanemi Will Come to His Brother’s Rescue in Infinity Castle

In the Final Battle sequence, the Demon Slayer group’s strategy begins to unravel as Muzan Kibutsuji, with Nakime’s assistance, ensnares them within his stronghold, intent on bringing an end to the struggle that has persisted for more than a thousand years. Tanjiro, Shinobu, and Zenitsu will go up against Akaza, Doma, and Kaigaku respectively. Simultaneously, Muichiro Tokito, the Mist Pillar, finds himself in a precarious situation as he encounters Upper Moon One by himself.
Why do you think I went to such extremes as to take our mother’s life? It was to shield you, so that you could have a home of your own, start a family, and grow old peacefully. To make up for the things I couldn’t provide for our mother, our siblings, and ourselves when we were young, I wanted you to have a wife, children, and a happy family. And I would never let any evil come close to you. (Sanemi Shinazugawa)
In a heartbeat, Kokushibo brutally disables Tokito, unaware that another individual is nearby. Genya, lacking the ability to use any breathing techniques, won’t have a chance against the swift Upper Moon who suddenly materializes behind him. A quick glance at Genya would reveal to the demon that he has been consuming demons.
Kokushibo will next divide Genya’s body in half, rendering him utterly powerless. However, unbeknownst to him, a protector is on standby, ready to go to extremes for Genya’s safety. Shortly after Genya experiences a brutal assault, Sanemi steps forward to challenge the Upper Moon for causing harm to his sibling. Although touching, this encounter may leave viewers puzzled, as they recall how Wind Hashira previously attempted to blind Genya during their last encounter.
Sanemi’s puzzling actions underscore the intricate bond he shares with his brother. For quite some time, these brothers have been estranged, and on certain instances when Genya reached out, Sanemi has distanced himself. However, it remains unclear what underlies the dispute that has fostered such hostility between them. What are the origins of the strife that has torn apart their relationship?
The Heartbreaking Story of Shinazugawa Brothers

In simpler terms, Sanemi and Genya grew up in a poor household with numerous hardships. Their father was an alcoholic who often resorted to physical violence towards the family. Tragically, he passed away early, leaving Shizu Shinazugawa as the sole provider for the family. Despite their struggles, they discovered joy in small moments. However, their lives took a grim turn when a demon assaulted their home.
Swiftly reacting, Sanemi charged towards the demon, while Genya remained behind, frantically attempting to rescue his wounded or nearly deceased siblings. In time, as Genya searched for Sanemi, he discovered him beside their mother’s lifeless body. Amidst the tumultuous scene, Genya wrongly accused Sanemi of causing his mother’s demise, unaware that she had been transformed into a demon and had attacked her own kin.
Sanemi grappled with the tough truth that Genya failed to trust him, despite him sacrificing his own mother for the wellbeing of their family. From that point onwards, he severed connections with Genya entirely and dedicated himself mainly to avenging his deceased mother and siblings by slaying demons.
Sanemi Will Face His Tragic Past in the Infinity Castle

When Sanemi engages in combat against Kokushibo, it will force him to reveal feelings for his long-neglected brother whom he had assaulted throughout the years. It’s been discovered that Sanemi kept his distance from his sibling intentionally so as to prevent him from joining the Demon Slayer Corps. The Wind Hashira, discouraging Genya, was worried about his fate in battle with a demon.
That’s right! And that wind… is going to wrench off your head! ~ Sanemi Shinazugawa to Kokushibo
Given he was all alone in the world, his worries were valid, particularly as his brother struggled with breath-control techniques. All Sanemi yearned for was to ensure his brother could live a tranquil life, free from the violence that had stripped him of everything. However, this peace eluded them. The emotional revelations from Sanemi will be a significant part of the Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle trilogy, altering how fans perceive Sanemi indefinitely.
I can hardly contain my excitement! Mark your calendars, folks, because on September 12, 2025, we’ll finally get our hands on the first installment of the Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle trilogy right here in the USA! This is one adventure I don’t want to miss!
