As a seasoned aficionado of the enchanting realm that is Demon Slayer, I must say, the intricate tapestry of characters and their journeys never cease to astound me. The latest revelations about the conversion of certain individuals into demons by means other than Muzan himself, has added yet another layer of complexity to this captivating narrative.

Head’s up! What follows might reveal key plot points from the Demon Slayer manga. You can catch Demon Slayer right now on Crunchyroll. Enjoy, but beware of potential spoilers!

One aspect that prevents the demons from Demon Slayer from posing an even greater danger is their limited reproductive rate. Unlike in some horror tropes where a single demon can infect multiple humans by biting or scratching, the curse of becoming a demon isn’t contagious like a virus. Muzan, the demon king, has the ability to transform humans into demons using his blood, but not all humans can be turned. Some individuals are resistant to his blood for reasons that aren’t entirely clear, though characters such as Kokushibo hint at their existence. The specific traits or immunities these people possess that make them resistant to Muzan’s blood remain unexplained in the series.

Occasionally, there are individuals immune to demonic blood. It’s true. But, tell me about yourself? (Kokushibo speaking to Kaigaku in the Demon Slayer manga, Chapter 145)

In Demon Slayer, it’s not as straightforward that only Muzan can transform humans into demons. Although there are instances where this happened in his absence, the truth is somewhat complex and not as clear-cut as a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’.

It’s Possible, but Only with Muzan’s Help

Muzan’s Blood and Permission Are a Must For Most

Essentially, any demon possesses the ability to transform humans into demons under certain conditions – specifically when they are prepared and granted permission by Muzan. This transformation is achieved by a demon offering a human some of Muzan’s blood for consumption. It remains unclear whether all demons carry Muzan’s blood within them, or if they must receive it directly from him. However, it appears that the higher-ranking demons have access to this blood, as they have been observed creating demons even when Muzan himself is not present.

After a human receives some of Muzan’s blood, they don’t instantly transform into demons. Instead, Muzan needs to accept the human first. This acceptance can be signaled either by the presence of another demon or the human expressing a desire to become a demon through their actions. If the human satisfies Muzan’s criteria and their body doesn’t naturally resist the blood, then they will fully transform into a demon. It is also worth noting that if the human knows Total Concentration Breathing, they will need more of Muzan’s blood to complete their transformation compared to an ordinary human.

Instances of Demons Other than Muzan Creating More Demons

Doma Is the One Who Converted the Upper Rank 6 Siblings

Demon Slayer: Other than Muzan, Can Demons Turn Humans Into Demons?

Initially, Tanjiro and his companions crossed paths with upper-tier demons Gyutaro and Daki (Upper Rank 6), who were not acquainted with Muzan during their human days. Instead, they interacted with a roaming Doma, who was then the Upper Rank 6 demon himself. In a critical moment when they were on the verge of death due to a series of misfortunes, Doma offered them an opportunity for vengeance by turning them into demons. He gave them his blood (which was actually Muzan’s), and following Muzan’s acceptance, their transformation into demons was finalized. Later on, Gyutaro and Daki ascended the ranks to become Upper Rank 6 demons, while Doma continued growing in power and rose to the position of Upper Rank 2 demon.

Kokushibo Converted Kaigaku, Who Became the New Upper Rank 6

Following the demise of Gyutaro and Daki, a demon named Kaigaku ascended to become the Upper Rank 6 among the Twelve Kizuki in the series Demon Slayer. While some viewers might not remember, Kaigaku has made several covert appearances within the show’s narrative. His initial appearance was during season 1, episode 17 titled “You Must Master a Single Thing”, where he appeared as one of Jigoro’s apprentices, alongside Zenitsu. Though his face wasn’t fully revealed, we only saw the lower half and some shots of him with his back to the camera. Kaigaku resurfaced again in season 4, episode 7, “Stone Hashira Gyomei Himejima”, during another flashback. This flashback took place before Kaigaku’s time with Jigoro and Zenitsu, thus unveiling that Kaigaku was previously one of the orphans cared for by Gyomei prior to joining the Demon Slayers. Remarkably, Kaigaku was the child who allowed a demon to infiltrate the temple by snuffing out the Wisteria incense that safeguarded it.

In the Hashira Training Arc’s conclusion, we haven’t seen Kaigaku since, but a letter Zenitsu received in season 4, episode 7 seems to be about him. Although it hasn’t been shown yet, this letter reveals that Kaigaku was transformed into a demon. At an unspecified time, Kaigaku came face-to-face with the Upper Rank 1 demon Kokushibo. Realizing he had no chance of victory, Kaigaku chose to surrender to Kokushibo. Impressed by his potential, Kokushibo gave Kaigaku some of Muzan’s blood, which Kaigaku reluctantly accepted, leading to his transformation into a demon and eventual rise as the new Upper Rank 6.

Tamayo Converted Yushiro Into a Demon

In this unique scenario, Tamayo, who is a self-liberated demon, performed an alteration on herself to avoid Muzan’s command and abstain from consuming human blood regularly. This modification she devised can potentially transform humans into demons that aren’t subjected to Muzan’s control, just like her. A flashback in “Demon Slayer” season 1, episode 10 titled “Together Forever”, depicts Tamayo reminiscing about her past as a medical professional when she encountered the bedridden Yushiro. In an attempt to prolong his life, Tamayo presented him with the opportunity to live longer as a demon, which he accepted.

Excitedly speaking here, I’m thrilled to share that I can now stream Demon Slayer right on Crunchyroll and Netflix! However, as of now, there’s no official word about when we’ll be able to continue our adventure with the Infinity Castle Arc in the next season. Keep your eyes peeled for updates!
