Starting soon, the popular “Demon Slayer” anime series will start adapting the final story arc from the original manga. The first film of the three-part saga, titled “Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle,” is set to release later this month in Japan. The manga concluded back in 2020, and fans can expect exceptional animation quality from this trilogy.
As I watch the final episodes of Demon Slayer unfold, I find myself pondering: Could there be a continuation of this captivating tale? To address this intriguing query, let’s explore whether there are any unresolved plot points that might spark a new sequel narrative.
A Sequel Is Possible, But Complicated
It’s worth mentioning that crafting a sequel to the popular series “Demon Slayer” might prove challenging, particularly one that features battles against demons in a direct continuation. Instead, there could be an extended epilogue or spin-off focusing on the everyday lives of the characters, offering a slice-of-life perspective.
Moreover, there’s an intriguing possibility for an action-packed sequel centered around Tanjiro’s Demon Slayer Mark. In the story, those who awaken this mark typically don’t live past the age of 25. Given that he is approximately 16–17 years old at the end of the manga, his time is limited, leaving less than a decade. This situation could serve as the foundation for a sequel, in which Nezuko and the others investigate the mark further and seek ways to help Tanjiro live longer.
To bring peace to the souls I’ve taken, and prevent any more casualties, I shall ruthlessly behead any demon that crosses my path! Yet I will not judge those who mourn their past actions and carry the burden of their demonic deeds, for demons were once human, just like me.
— Tanjiro Kamado
One alternative approach could be creating a narrative set several decades or centuries following the initial manga, for instance, a Demon Slayer tale set in modern-day Japan. In this revised timeline, Muzan’s transformation into a demon occurred as a result of an ancient elixir he consumed centuries before the manga, seeking eternal life. This isn’t the first story where a villain yearns for immortality, as such a dream is quite common, yet unrealistic among real people. Consequently, it’s plausible to have someone discover Muzan’s elixir and upgrade it using contemporary technology, leading to the establishment of a new Demon Slayer Corps.
Who Would Write the Sequel to Demon Slayer?
Fans who love Demon Slayer are hoping that any future installments might be penned by the original author, Koyoharu Gotoge. However, since wrapping up the story, Gotoge hasn’t worked on new manga or shown much enthusiasm for continuing the series. Yet, he has given permission to other writers to develop spin-offs like Kimetsu no Yaiba: Stories of Water and Flame. Consequently, it looks like a potential sequel – be it a manga or anime – may be crafted by another author in the future, possibly igniting passionate debates among fans about whether this new work fits within the story’s canon.
Does It Make Sense to Create a Demon Slayer Sequel?
From a business standpoint, it might be logical to create additional Demon Slayer anime once the manga has been completely adapted. Yet, there’s been strong debate among fans online suggesting they’re not keen on a sequel. A follow-up anime could potentially be viewed as exploitative, or “milking,” by many fans. Moreover, if this sequel omits the original characters, it may lose appeal for fans.
Instead of immediately creating a sequel, it could be wiser to consider other avenues for continuing the Demon Slayer storyline. This might involve developing spin-offs such as “Stories of Water and Flame” or focusing on characters from the original anime, like Yoriichi, to generate additional Demon Slayer content once the trilogy concludes. Regardless of the approach taken, it is likely that several years will pass before the final film is released, allowing the production team ample time to consider the best course of action.
When Will Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle Be Released?
On July 18, 2025, the first installment of the “Infinity Castle” trilogy, known as “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba — The Movie: Infinity Castle — Part 1: Akaza Returns,” will debut in Japan. Following its Japanese release, it’s set to arrive at international cinemas from August, starting with screenings in Asia. In the United States and Canada, the movie is scheduled to premiere on September 12.
Regarding the upcoming sequels, a definite release date hasn’t been announced just yet. However, whispers indicate that the production team might plan to launch a new film every two years. If this is true, we could expect the second movie to hit the screens in 2027, with the final installment following suit in 2029.
Demon Slayer is available to stream on Crunchyroll, Hulu, and Netflix in the US.
