As a seasoned gamer with over three decades of gaming under my belt, I must admit that the trailer for “Den of Wolves” has piqued my interest. The blend of heist FPS action set against the backdrop of a cyberpunk-inspired world where taking down corporations is the main objective, feels refreshingly relevant in today’s socio-political climate.
10 Chambers, the game development company established by the creator and designer of PAYDAY, Ulf Andersson, unveiled gameplay clips for their forthcoming title, Den of Wolves, at The Game Awards last night.
In simple terms, this game can be defined as an action-packed, cooperative first-person shooter that combines elements of techno-thrillers and heists, set in a future-oriented world with a hint of cyberpunk aesthetics. The storyline revolves around players targeting and overthrowing the high-ranking executives and boards of more than 400 in-game corporations.
The trailer highlights snippets of gameplay mainly focused on raiding vaults, but the playable characters aren’t necessarily after money. They’re after change.
Although Den of Wolves appears to be an open-world game, its mission structure is what gives it that impression. Players must complete tasks, gather information, and strategize before diving into a mission, much like in games such as Grand Theft Auto or Assassin’s Creed.
Once you begin a mission, you can either sneak in and out quietly or run in guns blazing.
Den of Wolves’ Story Has Real-World Parallels
Absolutely, the idea of challenging large corporations is extremely pertinent in today’s world, and Simon Viklund, the narrative director at 10 Chambers, certainly recognizes this reality.
As a gamer, I don’t need satire because I can simply use real-life instances of what corporations seem to evade scrutiny for. Honestly, we’re often left in the dark about their actual actions since they manage to keep many things hidden. So, there’s a veil of secrecy that shrouds their activities, leaving us guessing about what truly goes on behind closed doors. However, when we do uncover snippets of information, it feels like you could just swap the corporation names with those in a game’s storyline, and it would read as satire due to its grim and unsettling nature.
The action unfolds in an imaginary metropolis named Midway City set in the year 2097, characterized by corporations operating without any government intervention or supervision, which Viklund refers to as a haven for unrestricted advancement. Remarkably, this setting mirrors current news trends, thus releasing the game “Den of Wolves” couldn’t be more relevant and on-point at this time.
The game is expected to be released through Early Access in “20…”, which might mean it will come out in 2025. Over the past two years, its development has been ongoing, but a definite launch date hasn’t been announced yet.
