If you’re wondering how the new hardware on the Nintendo Switch 2 might affect gameplay, you could gain some insight by keeping an eye on the forthcoming Mario Kart World.
From the previews, it appears that the graphics in this new game are slightly improved compared to Mario Kart 8, but not dramatically so. However, instead of focusing on enhancing visual quality, Nintendo seems to have directed their technology towards an aspect that players might value even more: improving the gameplay itself.
In a recent interview with Nintendo, they revealed that the open-world feature in Mario Kart has been a key aspect of its identity since 2017. However, they couldn’t perfect this concept until the hardware of the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 became available.
During the creation of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Kosuke Yabuki, the game director for Mario Kart 7 and 8, and now producer for Mario Kart World, was already pondering ideas for the next installment. He started drafting concepts in March 2017. For this new game, our aim was to let players explore a vast world while driving, so we initiated the process of designing a global map similar to what you see now.
They aimed to construct a unified, expansive game map that encompassed every level within the game. However, as it turned out, this endeavor was significantly challenging.
To put it simply, we embarked on a journey to craft an entirely novel version of the popular game, Mario Kart… From thereon, a series of challenges arose.
Mario Kart World Developers Did Not Want To Compromise On Their Vision

As a dedicated gamer, I was thrilled to learn that the developers behind Mario Kart World were planning something spectacular for the upcoming edition. They wanted to introduce an eye-catching, polished new feature, but they didn’t want to compromise on the essentials that fans have come to expect from a modern Mario Kart game. For them, it was crucial to keep the smooth 60 FPS gameplay and the option for split-screen sessions, ensuring an immersive gaming experience for all players.
Given my understanding of the challenges involved in creating similar games, I found myself questioning whether it would be feasible for us to tackle a game like Mario Kart as well, feeling a bit of apprehension along the way.
When Halo Infinite debuted with an open world but lacked split-screen gameplay, it created quite a stir. Given the similar predicament faced by Halo 5 earlier, avoiding this specific challenge was crucial for the Mario Kart World development team. This inevitably meant some challenging decisions lay ahead.
Speaking about the Nintendo Switch development process, Kenta Sato, the game’s lead programmer, shared that it was challenging for us to include all our desired features. We talked about making adjustments like reducing graphics quality, lowering resolution, and even potentially decreasing the frame rate to 30 frames per second in certain instances. It was a testing time for us.
As a fervent admirer, when quizzed about what ultimately got put on hold by the development team, I was greeted with laughter. They gleefully unveiled their enthusiasm for the Switch 2’s hardware, describing it as a “beacon of hope” within their ranks. With this promising foundation, they have been crafting the game that we are all eagerly anticipating.
