Despite Pending Lawsuit With Nintendo, Palworld Devs Still Considering Switch 2 Release

Summary

  • Pocketpair’s Palworld strongly resembles Nintendo’s Pokemon
  • Palworld unavailable on Nintendo Switch due to technical limitations
  • Pocketpair considering porting to Nintendo Switch 2 if feasible

It’s undeniable that Palworld by Pocketpair shares many similarities with Nintendo’s popular Pokémon series, despite having distinct gameplay mechanics. The resemblances extend to the theme, visual style, and even overall concept, which has led to Nintendo filing a lawsuit against Pocketpair due to these apparent borrowings from their profitable intellectual property.

It’s quite surprising that Palworld isn’t playable on Nintendo Switch, which is almost everywhere else. It appears that the decision isn’t about Pocketpair choosing not to release it on the console, but rather due to apparent technical constraints.

Palworld Devs Considering Porting Palworld to Nintendo Switch 2 If It’s “Beefy” Enough

At the Game Developers Conference (GDC), John “Bucky” Buckley from Pocketpair Communication mentioned that while they’d love to make Palworld compatible with the Nintendo Switch, it’s a resource-intensive game, which makes it challenging.

Given the Nintendo Switch 2 appears to have more power, could we possibly find it there? Bucky wasn’t able to confirm, but he did mention that Pocketpair has shown interest. However, the development team hasn’t had an opportunity yet to inspect the inner workings of Nintendo’s upcoming console.

Bucky mentioned that he hasn’t caught a glimpse of those specs so far…Just like everyone else, he’s keeping his fingers crossed. He’s been strolling around GDC, hoping someone might share some information about them, but all the people he’s talked to claim they haven’t laid eyes on them yet.

If it has a rich beefy quality, it is definitely worth considering. We put in significant effort and achieved great results optimizing the game for Steam Deck. There’s still work to be done, but overall, we’re very pleased with the outcome. If there’s a chance to make it available on more handheld devices, we would certainly like to do so. – Bucky’s thoughts.

The main point of discussion is whether Nintendo will permit the game in question to run on the Nintendo Switch 2, considering they are currently suing the developer for allegedly violating their trademark. Given this context, it seems unlikely that the game would be allowed, as its presence could potentially weaken the foundation of their lawsuit. Moreover, I find it hard to imagine Nintendo approving the Pokémon brand’s association with Palworld on the same console due to Pocketpair’s game featuring guns.

Based on its initial reveal, we’ve got an idea of what the Nintendo Switch 2 might look like. However, there are still several unknown aspects. Luckily, Nintendo has scheduled a new Nintendo Direct for April 2, which promises to delve deeply into the Nintendo Switch 2. During this event next week, we anticipate that they will discuss details such as its price, release date, launch software, and other important information.
