The final chapter of Destiny 2’s Episode Heresy has been wrapped up, which signals a temporary pause in fresh content. However, mark your calendars for May 6th, 2025, as that’s when the next Rite of Nine event is scheduled to launch.
During the regular weekly update on April 22nd, 2025, gamers playing Destiny 2 stumbled upon an unusual occurrence: enigmatic chessmen appeared at different spots within the game universe, integrating themselves into various activities.
At the moment when this manual was penned, we remain uncertain as to what specific role these chess pieces play beyond accomplishing a series of victories to collect Strange Coins and passing the time amidst the dry spell in Episode Heresy Act 3’s absence.
For those who are completionists at heart, they won’t be able to resist the urge to collect all 60 of these items. Fortunately, you don’t need to solve any complex puzzles for this task. Here’s a detailed guide that will help you find every single chess piece.

Eris’s Apartment
There are a total of four chess pieces in Eris’s apartment.
There are two in her flat, and the other two are in the building’s staircases and corridors.
The first item can be found resting on a table in the living area, while the second one is placed close to the Shaping Device.
Next, exit her apartment and proceed down the hall. You’ll notice two individuals chatting in a dimly lit corner of the passageway. Then, take a right and you’ll come across some stairs. Ascend those stairs and you’ll discover the third chess piece.
Make your way down to the building’s main lobby, which serves as the reception area. You’ll find a robot vacuum cleaner tidying the floor there. The next chess piece ought to be located nearby.
Tower
There are three chess pieces at the Tower.

The initial location will be inside a hangar, which involves some jumps since it’s hidden within the secret chamber of the Future War Cult.
The first place you need to go is a hangar with a few jumps required because it’s located in the covert room of the Future War Cult.
You gotta head to a hangar first, but watch your step cause it’s secretly tucked away in the Future War Cult’s special room.
To reach your destination, you’ll have to ascend a sequence of staircases leading almost to the ceiling, followed by navigating through some ventilation shafts. Once inside, you’ll discover your initial chess piece.
The next one is in the main Tower area. Go right past Banshee, and you’ll find a cargo elevator.
Descend to the lowest level and pass through the doorway leading to Zavala’s office. You’ll find the chess piece on a shelf to your right.
Make your way down to the ground floor, then enter Zavala’s office via the door. The chess piece is tucked away neatly on a nearby shelf to your right side.

Alrighty, the third one you’re referring to is hidden in the Annex, close by where that Drifter fellow usually hangs out. But let me remind you once again, I’m not feeling the urge for a round of Gambit right now.
EDZ
Two chess pieces are hidden in the EDZ, and are quite easy to find.

The initial location can be found at Winding Cove, perched high upon a cliff with an enchanting view of the surroundings. Just follow the path upwards, and you will easily locate it.

The next one is at the Sludge, at the entrance to the Dark Forest.
Upon your arrival, make your way towards the location where a cluster of Cabal can be found. After that, proceed by turning right into a secluded, narrow passageway. Follow this path and you’ll encounter a dim portal. The chess piece is situated close to it.
Europa
Two more chess pieces are hidden on Europa.

One is at the Beyond, right behind Elsie. You won’t miss it.

The second location requires quite a walk. Head to the Bray Exoscience facility and continue until you reach Clovis Bray’s position. You’ll find the chess piece prominently displayed on a stand directly in front of him.
The Nether
From now on, a significant portion of your search will focus on locating the next 33 chess pieces, as the majority of them are dispersed across the expanses of the Nether region.
Play through just one round of the Nether (for convenience, consider using a Private instance for uninterrupted play), then repeatedly refresh the activity until the Founts area appears as a spawn point.
The spot where the Hull Breach occurred is now included in our regular play list, so you may have to attempt it a few times before finding the specific location you’re aiming for.
The Founts
In The Founts, there are a total of seven entities. We’ll explore them sequentially, based on my discovery order. If you imagine yourself standing with your back to the massive closed gate, the side you initially appear and enter from via the Mausoleum can be referred to as the “right” side.
Since the chess pieces are similar to Osseous Fragments in terms of being collectibles, they will show up as markers on your minimap. In case the instructions aren’t explicit enough, just look out for these markers.

Upon your arrival, you’ll notice a series of “doorways” projecting from the wall to your left. Ascend to the second row, and you’ll discover a chess piece there.

As a gamer, I’d keep moving forward along the corridor until I approach a corner with a big, brass pipe. I’ll then scramble up this pipe and find a hole in the ceiling nearby where a chest is hidden. Behind that chest, there’s a chess piece waiting to be discovered!

Afterward, leave and take a left, then ascend the staircase on your left toward the corner of the room. You’ll find a chest nestled in a hidden spot above if you look for a hole in the ceiling.

There is a chess piece near the tentacles at the top of the area, near a ledge.
There’s another on a Taken tentacle to the right of the sealed gate.

The next one should be located on the bottom floor on the left side, near a door frame.

Lastly, I stumbled upon a partially open, not-so-large door nestled close by, hiding a treasure trove of weapons within. There’s even a chess piece lying around.
Mausoleum
There are five chess pieces in the Mausoleum.
There are two entities close by your typical respawn point. One is located just beyond you, while the other is slightly further away, concealed in a nearby corner.

The third one is on top of some rocks as you jump down into the pit where the tentacles are.

At the far end of the arena, you will encounter another one as well. Simply leap onto the ledge, and you’ll discover it hidden in a corner.

The final chess piece in the Mausoleum is located at the most remote part of the area. Proceed to the wreckage of the Skyburner vessel, where you usually collect solar crystals. Climb onto the ledge on top of the ship, and there you’ll discover a hidden chess piece nestled within a nook.
Trenchway
There are five chess pieces in the Trenchway.

As soon as you’re born anew (glance to your right then look down) or leap over (a ledge), you’ll find a chess piece cleverly concealed atop the weathered exterior of the Dreadnaught.

Another one is immediately straight ahead of where you spawn, near the dead Skyburner Cabal.

Head completely across the region, towards where a concealed boss, usually found near a brazier, typically lies. You’ll discover a chess piece beneath an overhanging ledge.
Navigate into the Dreadnaught and proceed via the Trenchway. There’s a chess piece tucked away to your left at a higher level. Ascend the disappearing platforms, and you’ll come across a claw-like control that you can engage. The chess piece lies hidden just behind it.
If you find yourself present, and possess the “Rites of the Deep Tithe Found Worthy”, feel free to engage it, thereby unlocking a chess piece hidden within.

Ultimately, the final chess piece in Trenchway can be found on the opposite bank of the trench, a place known for hiding the enigmatic Ogre boss.
The chess piece will be sitting conspicuously near where the Ogre would spawn.
Hall Of Souls
In the Hall of Souls, you’ll discover a total of seven items. Brace yourself, as this might just be the trickiest spot for locating chess pieces. Hang on tight!

You’ll find the initial location marked on a nearby wall. To reach it, you’ll need to scale the wall, moving slightly to your left from your usual starting point.
Descend and move to your left, there you will encounter a towering column. You may leap upward, and the chess piece is located directly in its center.

Return to your origin, and you’ll discover an entryway leading to a compact room with a narrow passageway resembling a tunnel. Venture into this dimly lit tunnel and continue until you reach a sloping area. At the peak of this incline, you should find a chess piece.
Keep going straight ahead until you exit the dimly lit region. You may stumble upon a massive Taken corruption, but sometimes you’ll find structures resembling wasp nests instead.
Leap onto the shell-like material peeling from the wall beneath a platform, and there you’ll find a chess piece perched on an overhang. Grab it when you can.

Head towards the region where you might come across a Hive Relic. In the distance, there’s an entrance you can pass through.
Immediately look back to the right and you’ll see another chess piece.

A chess piece is nestled among the Hive statues along the hallway that goes to the Court of Oryx.

Reaching the last chess piece can be challenging since it depends entirely on random chance. Proceed towards the central region, where you’ll encounter the boss, Subjugator.
Ascend the cliffside and retrieve your Ghost. If there are disappearing ledges on your path, stick to them, and you’ll ultimately discover the chess piece.
If not, then it’s best to use a sword to traverse up the pipes.
Secrets
Nine chess pieces can be discovered by completing almost any secret in The Nether.
As far as we know, chess pieces spawn randomly as rewards, but are thankfully rather frequent.
Court Of Blades
In the game called “Court of Blades”, there are five chess pieces involved. Once you launch the game, you can effortlessly obtain these chess pieces.
There’s one in each combat arena:
- On Io, the chess piece is right behind you when you spawn, in a nook right next to a beam.
- In the unknown Dreadnaught area, you can find the chess piece right behind you, on top of the anchor/lantern structure.
- On Europa, the chess piece is on the far side of the room, tucked behind an ice pillar.
You can get an additional chess piece by buying Runic Enhancements, and another by simply finishing the task at hand.
The Taken Path

Six chess pieces move along the Taken Path. Three pieces represent the Path of Ambition, while another set of three pieces symbolize the Path of Resolve.
Six chess figures advance on the Taken Route; there are three for the Path of Desire and another trio for the Path of Determination.
In simple terms, just proceed with playing the game, regardless of which route you take. Gathering Taken balls on the Path of Ambition might offer you an opportunity to obtain a chess piece. Similarly, firing a Sigil Shard ball while on the Path of Resolve could potentially grant you another chess piece as well.
Once you’ve gotten three, switch to the next path the next time you’re in Eris’s apartment.
Drifter
In the end, the Drifter will award you with five chess pieces upon advancing through your chess collection.
Gather all your chess pieces until you reach approximately 55 in total, then head over to the Drifter, and he’ll reward you with more chess pieces.
