Destiny 2 Grants Fans’ Long-Awaited Wish with New Taken Shader!

Summary

  • Episode: Heresy is a turning point for Destiny 2 with more depth and variety in its content.
  • The Umbral Rumble shader grants a Taken aesthetic to Guardians, but misses some key aspects.
  • The new Dreadnaught location and Nether activity contribute to Episode: Heresy being one of Destiny 2’s best moments.

As a dedicated fan, I must say that Destiny 2’s Episode: Heresy has truly been a game-changer for me since we embarked on the first Episode, Echoes, back in June. At first glance, the new episodic structure seemed like just a rebranded version of Destiny 2’s old seasonal model. However, Episode: Heresy has surpassed my expectations by offering more depth and variety compared to previous episodes, even though its storyline and difficulty have been met with some controversy. Despite these debates, the changes leading up to Destiny 2’s Edge of Fate expansion have undeniably elevated the game to one of its peak experiences since The Final Shape.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but be thrilled about one of the standout aspects of Episode: Heresy – the comeback of the iconic Dreadnaught from the original game! The Dreadnaught’s return has also ushered in a fresh new experience called Nether activity, which is a roguelike adventure where players traverse randomized objectives and modifiers on the Dreadnaught. These features, among others, have truly set Episode: Heresy apart as one of the most memorable moments in Destiny 2 in recent times. But there’s even more to celebrate! A recently added feature to Destiny 2 has finally ticked off a significant item on fans’ wish lists.

Destiny 2 Finally Has a Taken Shader — Sort Of

Destiny 2’s Umbral Rumble Shader Has Been a Long Time Coming

Ever since The Dreadnaught made its comeback in Destiny’s Taken King expansion, fans have eagerly awaited two main things: the return of the Dreadnaught itself and a Taken shader to personalize their Guardian’s looks, weapons, and vehicles. Many players admire the eerie, void-like style of the Taken enemies and long to mirror this look in their own characters. Until now, the Desolate armor set from the original Destiny was as close as players could get to assuming a Taken appearance, but even that was just an armor set rather than a dedicated shader themed around the Taken.

The Armor Set called “The Desolate” seems to bear a striking similarity to the Taken, compared to the look of Umbral Rumble. However, it’s hard to overlook the fact that it is an armor set, not a shader.

Due to the recent addition of the Umbral Rumble shader in Episode: Heresy within Destiny 2, players now have a chance to experience a Taken-like appearance, albeit somewhat approximated. By solving a chess puzzle in an Alternate Reality Game, players can obtain the Umbral Rumble shader and achieve a look similar to the distinctive black-and-white, smoky style that is commonly associated with the Taken. However, the response towards the Umbral Rumble shader has been lukewarm, as it appears more like a Halloween costume representing a Taken rather than a shader that entirely transforms Guardians into the iconic adversaries.

Umbral Rumble Unfortunately Misses Key Aspects of the Taken

In simpler terms, the Umbral Rumble shader does a good job of creating the eerie green look associated with the Taken, but it falls short when it comes to adding the moving, starlit effects that are typical of these enemies. This could be due to the technical constraints of Destiny 2’s shader system, as more intricate visual aspects like shifting textures and starry voids require a lot more resources than one might expect. However, Destiny 2 has made significant improvements in its use of shaders in recent updates.

With the arrival of the Umbral Rumble shader in Episode: Heresy, there’s been a partial fulfillment of the desire for a Taken shader.

In due time, gamers might obtain an authentic Taken shader, however, until then, they can utilize the Umbral Rumble shader upon completing Destiny 2‘s Heresy Episode storyline. Although it doesn’t possess the characteristic starry void-like design that the Taken are renowned for, it currently serves as the closest alternative.
