Destiny 2 is Doubling Down on Revenant’s Biggest Sin At The Worst Possible Time

Summary

  • Destiny 2 Episode Revenant faced backlash for non-craftable seasonal weapons due to bugs and a less rewarding Tonic system.
  • The decision not to make seasonal weapons craftable leads to decreased vault space for players over time.
  • Bungie’s reservation to add crafting for Heresy weapons in Episode 3 may spell trouble for Destiny 2’s future.

As a seasoned Destiny 2 player with countless hours spent grinding through the cosmos, I must say that the recent decisions by Bungie have left me a bit perplexed. The removal of craftable seasonal weapons in Revenant and the lack of clarity regarding Heresy’s Heretical Arsenal has sent my Vault space spiraling out of control.

At the moment, Destiny 2 is dealing with several problems stemming from bugs and glitches that were introduced with the launch of Episode Revenant, followed by Vesper’s Host Dungeon, Act 2, and the Dawning 2024 event. The negative reception for Revenant has been largely due to the combination of these game issues and changes made in Episode 2 to Destiny 2’s formula. One of the main complaints from fans about Revenant was the removal of craftable seasonal weapons, replaced by the Tonic system. However, it appears that Bungie is planning to make this change again, despite vocal feedback from the community.

The poor response to the Revenant weapons in Destiny 2 can be attributed to their mediocre quality, much like other seasonal weapons, with some being good while others fall short. This is why they were made craftable, as they don’t represent the exceptional loot that players are often eager to pursue. However, the Tonic system was designed to make these weapons more accessible and focusable, but it turned out to be plagued by bugs and not particularly rewarding. Despite this, the reception of non-craftable seasonal guns has been negative. Bungie’s recent announcement about Destiny 2’s future suggests that seasonal weapons will revert back to being non-craftable once more.

Why Destiny 2 is Shooting Itself in The Foot Without Craftable Weapons

The decision not to make seasonal weapons craftable in Destiny 2 derives from a general sense that crafting slowly made regular drops feel insignificant and not valuable. This is arguably true for many players, as getting five red-border versions of a given weapon means that any future drop of that gun won’t be impactful since players can already get their desired roll in The Enclave. However, one could argue that seasonal weapons are the perfect target for crafting given that they typically are slight upgrades over existing guns, and future loot will usually surpass them.

As a fervent supporter of Destiny 2, I firmly believe it would be logical to restrict crafting capabilities solely to seasonal firearms, letting other weapon types remain unchanged. This approach could serve as an excellent foundation for novice players, ensuring they have the opportunity to advance through upgrades. In Bungie’s End of Year 2024 Developer Update post, they clarified that crafting won’t be incorporated into Revenant weapons and apparently, it also won’t reappear in Heresy.

In the upcoming Episode 3, titled “Heresy,” developers at Bungie are considering introducing a fresh level of seasonal firearms known as the “Heretical Arsenal.” At present, it’s still uncertain what the implications of this new tier might be.

Why No More Craftable Seasonal Weapons in Destiny 2 Means Less Vault Space

One potential issue with transitioning from seasonal weapons having craftable aspects to emphasizing the upgradable nature of perks is that a player’s inventory storage will gradually become smaller over time. This is because crafting a weapon, or fully unlocking its blueprint in Destiny 2, allows for the safe dismantling of any previous or future versions of that same weapon. Over time, relying on upgraded versions of randomly-rolled weapons may lead to less and less available storage space.

In the same Year-End update, Bungie mentioned they are exploring options for improving vault storage, primarily tied to Destiny 2’s upcoming expansion, Frontiers. However, their decision not to make Heresy’s weapons craftable has left Episode 3 in a challenging position, as many players expressed disapproval towards this move during Revenant.

Destiny 2’s Episode Heresy Needs a Better Tonic System

Additionally, since Bungie decides against crafting seasonal weapons, they must devise another method to enhance the drop rates of these firearms, making them more obtainable and attractive. It remains uncertain if the Heretical Arsenal will address this issue effectively, but it’s hoped that it offers an upgraded version of Revenant’s Tonic system. At present, Bungie seems unwilling to alter their position on crafting seasonal weapons for at least Episode 3, and possibly even the major Frontiers update, which could cause complications for Destiny 2.
