Destiny 2 Revenant's Gameplay Loop Explained

As a seasoned Guardian with countless hours under my belt, I must say that Destiny 2’s Episode: Revenant has certainly shaken things up, and not always in a good way. The new gameplay loop, while innovative, feels a bit too grind-heavy for my taste.

The following contains spoilers for
Destiny 2
Episode: Revenant Act 1.

The much-anticipated second chapter of Destiny 2, titled Episode: Revenant, has arrived, offering players a fresh gaming experience centered around the latest activity in the game. Be prepared to immerse yourself deeply into Destiny 2‘s novel gameplay cycle, as it demands extensive resource gathering and can be quite demanding with time.

Upon finishing the opening story mission of Destiny 2’s Episode: Revenant, titled “Na-Veskirisk,” players are granted access to the latest gameplay features. It is important to mention that this mission serves as an introduction to mechanics that will be utilized later in the game, particularly the new Onslaught mode, Onslaught: Salvation. Once the mission is successfully completed, players will find themselves in the updated Last City social space, marking the start of Episode: Revenant’s (initially for Act 1) new gameplay cycle.

The Setup for Episode: Revenant’s Gameplay Loop

In essence, the core mechanic in ‘Destiny 2’ Episode: Revenant mainly circles around Onslaught: Salvation and the recently introduced Tonic and Fieldwork system. However, this new system has sparked debate among gamers, primarily due to a significant amount of menu navigation and crafting tasks that players will encounter in the initial act of Episode: Revenant. While there is still ample combat and gameplay, these activities are predominantly geared towards crafting Tonics and completing Fieldwork assignments.

When you first step into the latest social hub in the Last City, players meet Eido and her alchemy lab, the Tonic Laboratory. Here, she’s been tirelessly working on ancient Eliksni recipes to save her ailing father, Mithrax, who is afflicted by Nezarec’s curse. After wrapping up the opening mission and acquiring the Slayer Baron Apothecary Satchel Artifact, players are given their initial quest for Act 1 of Episode: Revenant, which starts with them preparing a Tonic at Eido’s alchemy table.

Episode: Revenant’s Gameplay Loop of Tonics, Fieldwork, and Onslaught: Salvation

In the game, Revenant Episode, a guide will walk players through the Tonic-brewing procedure. To create a Tonic, you’ll first pick your desired Tonic, gather the essential ingredients, bring them to an Eliksni Apparatus for brewing, taste it, and finally infuse it with Light’s power to get the completed product. As players must perform this process each time they want to craft a Tonic in Revenant Episode, expect to repeat it frequently throughout the game. These Tonics offer players an opportunity to earn unique rewards from Destiny 2 activities. The most straightforward way to obtain the reagents for brewing these Tonics is by participating in Onslaught: Salvation matches.

After finishing the Tonic-brewing guide, gamers encounter Revenant’s Fieldwork system, a mechanism for procuring fresh Tonic recipes. In essence, this system functions as an upgraded bounty system where players accomplish various tasks to get Tonic Reagent Packs and Tonic Upgrades. The contents of each Reagent Pack can be exchanged for new Tonic recipes at Eido’s Tonic Table. As more recipes are unlocked, the rarity of the available recipes increases.

In the Episode: Revenant, this procedure is carried out for every kind of Tonic, which includes Volatile Tonics, Onslaught Tonics, World Gear Tonics, Shadestalker Tonics, and Resource Tonics, to ensure consistency.

In summary, it appears that most Destiny 2 players are likely to focus their time in Onslaught: Salvation, as it offers an optimal environment for farming reagents, acquiring new loot, and utilizing Onslaught Tonics. This area serves as the core of the new gameplay loop introduced in Destiny 2’s Episode: Revenant, consisting of completing rounds in Onslaught: Salvation, performing Fieldwork, crafting and using Tonics, only to repeat this cycle. However, it’s important to note that this could change when we move into Act 2 of Episode: Revenant; for now, this is the current state of the game.
