In the realm of contemporary loot-shooter series, it’s only natural that heavyweights like “Destiny 2” and the latest “Borderlands” game engage in a friendly competition. This isn’t just about capturing players’ gaming hours, but primarily about setting new trends and breaking ground in this genre. Given that the original “Borderlands” game is often recognized for pioneering this subgenre more than a decade ago, “Borderlands” games generally set the standards among loot shooters. However, the “Destiny” franchise has significantly grown and evolved since the original “Destiny” was launched over 10 years back, and it appears that with the release of the “The Edge of Fate” expansion for “Destiny 2” on July 15, it will finally match one key aspect of the “Borderlands” games.
In addition to the fresh content and updates in the upcoming expansion for Destiny 2 titled The Edge of Fate, there’s been a recent unveiling of a new vehicle – the Griffin. Unlike Sparrows and Skimmers, the Griffin will come equipped with mounted guns, which is an aspect that hasn’t been significantly featured in the Destiny franchise so far. However, the introduction of the Griffin could potentially enhance vehicle combat, something that has been a significant gameplay element in the Borderlands series since its inception. This could mark a change for the better in the way vehicle combat is approached within the Destiny universe.
Destiny 2’s New Griffin Vehicle Could Rival Borderlands 4’s Digirunners
The Borderlands Franchise Arguably Does Vehicles Best Among Looter Shooters (So Far)
In Borderlands games, even though characters might struggle with advanced combat during Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode playthroughs, their vehicles offer a range of weapons and features that are beneficial for both exploration and battles. Compared to vehicles in other looter shooter games, which primarily function as fast but fragile transportation, the Borderlands franchise excels at vehicle design.
In essence, the new Digirunners in Borderlands 4 stand out significantly when compared to Destiny 2’s Sparrows and Skimmers. Unlike vehicles in the Borderlands series, Sparrows and Skimmers in Destiny 2 have very restricted applications. Essentially, they are not designed for combat as they lack weapons, making them ineffective in such situations. On the other hand, Digirunners in Borderlands 4 come equipped with guns and numerous options to customize their performance, which greatly enhances vehicle combat in Borderlands 4 compared to Destiny 2.
Destiny 2’s New Kepler Planet and Griffins Could be a Game-Changer for Vehicle Combat
In the universe of Destiny, battles involving vehicles have been restricted to rare instances throughout the series, serving more as a novelty than a dependable tool for combat. However, with the introduction of Kepler planet in Destiny 2, which emphasizes exploration as a primary feature, and the addition of Griffin vehicles equipped with mounted guns, it appears that vehicle combat could become a regular element in Destiny 2 gameplay.
Destiny 2’s New Griffin Vehicle Could Shake up PvP and Sparrow Racing League
In addition to Player vs Environment (PvE), the latest Griffin vehicles in Destiny 2 offer intriguing possibilities for Player vs Player (PvP) game modes, something that the Borderlands series has yet to explore. Notably, if Destiny’s popular Sparrow Racing League ever returns, the new Griffin vehicle could significantly alter the gameplay dynamics compared to when the league was last active and only Sparrows were available. Thus, while the Griffin might help Destiny 2 match Borderlands 4’s vehicular combat, its core PvP modes could provide it with a distinctive edge.
Before the “The Edge of Fate” expansion, a fresh vehicle-oriented PVP gameplay will be introduced in “Destiny 2” on May 9, 2025 (Friday). This temporary game mode, dubbed “Heavy Metal,” offers an intense 3vs3 battle experience where players engage using Brigs and tanks.
