Destiny 2 consistently adds new activities with each season or major update, giving players more ways to earn rewards. The upcoming expansion, Renegades, launching next month, will introduce a new mode called Lawless Frontier. This mode appears to be similar to extraction-based gameplay, where players collect loot and try to escape.
Bungie hesitated to call Lawless Frontier an ‘extraction’ activity because escaping with rewards isn’t its main focus, though it shares similarities with that style of gameplay. Game Rant recently got an early look at Lawless Frontier during a preview event for the upcoming Destiny 2: Renegades expansion. It’s a tough new challenge that will require teamwork, but if the reward system is anything to go by, it could be a great way for players to earn loot in Destiny 2.
Picking a Faction and Pledging Your Allegiance
In the Lawless Frontier activity, you progress by choosing a faction to support. There are three to pick from in Renegades: the Pikers (representing the Fallen), Tharsis Reformation (Vex), and Totality Division (Cabal). Each faction lets you earn rewards and unlock new abilities by increasing your Reputation Rank. You’ll also receive a Rewards Shipment with gear. The faction you choose determines the types of quests – called contract orders – you’ll receive and complete to earn even more rewards.
The idea of different factions works perfectly in the new Tharsis Outpost area, which feels like a rough-and-tumble hub filled with shady characters – but with a unique Destiny 2 flavor. While the concept isn’t entirely new to gaming, it’s a first for the Bungie universe. There’s also a lot to unlock and earn, so if you enjoy completing repetitive tasks for rewards, you’ll find plenty to do here.
How Lawless Frontier Works in Destiny 2: Renegades
The Preparation Phase
In the Lawless Frontier, players can undertake missions on Mars, Venus, or Europa. These missions fall into three main categories: Bounty Hunts, Sabotage, and Smuggling. While players have the freedom to choose their destination and mission type, there’s a strong reason to focus on a particular location.
In the Lawless Frontier, you’ll find areas called Contested Territories where factions battle for dominance. These are the hotspots for action, and completing a Priority Contract in one of these areas will benefit your chosen faction. While it’s a good idea to look for these territories (they change location), you’re free to choose any location you prefer.
Okay, so once we’ve chosen where we’re going, our fireteam and I head to the hangar. That’s where we use Spider’s Shank to pick out two Renegade Abilities for the mission in the Lawless Frontier. There’s a really cool mix of options – stuff to help us attack, defend, or support the team – so we can really customize things to fit how we want to play. For example, if we’re holding a zone, a healing drone or something that weakens enemies is awesome. But if we need to clear out a bunch of enemies fast, we can go with something like the Behemoth vehicle or call in a strafing run. Once everyone’s set with their abilities, we jump on the ship and head out to the Lawless Frontier!
Renegade Abilities are the Key to Success
Renegade Abilities are a key part of the Lawless Frontier experience. Players summon these abilities with a visual effect resembling an airdrop, using a coin similar to The Drifter’s Gambit coin. You’ll choose two abilities to bring on each mission, and they’ll be essential for helping your team succeed. While some, like the Behemoth, are generally more useful, each ability can be beneficial in the right situation. For instance, if you’re running low on ammo, there’s an ability that delivers both ammunition and damage to enemies when it lands.
As a big fan, I’ve found these Renegade Abilities are really cool, but you can’t just spam them! Each one has a limited number of uses, or ‘charges’, when you start a mission. You can find more charges in chests around the map, but they’re pretty rare. It makes you think carefully about when to use them – kind of like Strategems in Helldivers 2. Using them at the right moment can completely save a tough fight, and that’s important because you definitely want to escape with all the goodies you’ve collected!
Renegade Abilities can be upgraded as you play, adding new features like a Stasis bomb for the Behemoth, alongside its regular blaster. These upgrades will likely become available over the next season, though this hasn’t been officially announced.
Completing Objectives and Collecting Loot
Each mission into the Lawless Frontier has a unique goal. While you can tackle optional side tasks for extra rewards like Lockboxes, the primary aim is to finish three key steps and then safely leave the area.
Sabotage
First, use the charges you’ve gathered from defeated enemies to damage a generator. Then, defeat four waves of enemies in the area, and finally, plant and detonate explosives.
Smuggle
In Smuggle, you begin by completing four waves of enemies. After that, you gather resources and convert them into cargo, which you then deliver to a transport ship.
Bounty Hunt
Okay, so Bounty Hunt is pretty straightforward – you get a target and have to take them down. First, I need to scout around and collect intel – basically, stuff dropped by enemies I defeat. Then, I gotta clear out an area with four waves of bad guys, and then I can finally go after the boss. It’s a three-step process, but it’s a fun challenge!
The three jobs in Lawless Frontier have a similar rhythm and share some common goals. Destiny 2 players will find familiar elements from other activities, but with some interesting new additions. Initially, I didn’t enjoy the Smuggle job very much because it felt slow and repetitive, requiring you to move cargo across the map. However, a Bungie developer explained that you can use the Behemoth vehicle for transport, which completely changed my opinion. While Smuggle might still be the least popular job and something players try to avoid, I hope Bungie can address any frustrating aspects before the game launches.
Extracting to Safety Amidst Oncoming Enemy Hordes
Okay, so once we finish the main goal on a mission, we call in the evac ship. And let me tell you, that’s when things really go crazy! It draws in tons of enemies, and it becomes a total scramble to survive. It’s the most hectic part of Lawless Frontier, but honestly, those close calls – barely getting out alive with your team – are some of the coolest moments. Plus, the first person to board the ship gets to man the cannons and help cover everyone else, which is a really awesome team play feature!
Lawless Frontier Rewards: Is It Worth It?
Following the releases of Destiny 2‘s Edge of Fate and Ash and Iron expansions, the game has been generous with rewards, and the Lawless Frontier activity continues that trend. I can’t yet say how good the gear will be, but there was a lot of loot available after each run. As you play Lawless Frontier, you’ll earn lockboxes to open for more loot if you successfully complete the activity, along with Dark Matter Ingots to spend with your chosen faction. Plus, you’ll also receive standard rewards after finishing each run.
If you survive, Lawless Frontier offers the best rewards. It has many ways to get loot, including various lockboxes, special keycards to access new areas, and items dropped by enemies. It appears to be a rewarding experience, particularly if your team works well together and uses their abilities effectively.
Yes, There Are Invasions, But They Are Optional
Completing these tasks does come with some danger, as players can invade each other in the Lawless Frontier. If you have a currency called a Deathmark, you can choose to become an invader in this area. It’s important to know that participating in these invasions is entirely optional, but Bungie wants to add some unpredictability to its Destiny 2 activities, and this system could make each mission feel different.
My time playing Lawless Frontier didn’t include any invasions, or chances to participate in them, but I think adding invasions to the activity sounds like a really interesting idea. Bungie believes invasions will add a layer of strategy, as invaders use special abilities to disrupt otherwise smooth gameplay.
I tried asking if the enemy could offer assistance, but they said it wasn’t possible right now. Considering how cooperative players usually are in PvE games like ARC Raiders, I expected a way to become allies with the enemy. However, as we’ve seen in games like Gambit, most invaders just want to challenge players and make things more difficult.
The New Behemoth Vehicle is Destiny 2’s AT-ST and It is STRONG
Even though not many people have tried it yet, the Behemoth weapon is incredibly powerful in Lawless Frontier. At the hardest difficulty, it almost feels required – both of my teammates also equipped it. It excels at quickly eliminating weaker enemies, protecting allies, and dealing significant damage to bosses. I suspect it would also be effective against invading players, but I didn’t encounter any invasions during my test play.
It’s likely the Behemoth enemy will be less challenging when the Renegades update comes out in December, but I hope players still get to experience its strength. Since you won’t be able to use the new Renegades upgrades anywhere else, it would be great if the Behemoth remained as powerful as it was during the initial preview.
Lawless Frontier: Final Impressions
It’s clear why Bungie doesn’t want to label Lawless Frontier as an ‘extraction mode.’ Unlike typical extraction modes where players take on extra challenges for more loot, this Destiny 2 activity has a straightforward, step-by-step progression. Players simply complete the objectives in order and then focus on safely escaping with what they’ve earned.
There’s a real excitement in tackling the challenging areas and working as a team to achieve goals, and Lawless Frontier does that really well. It feels familiar, but with enough fresh ideas to keep each playthrough interesting. As you unlock and improve new abilities, I think Lawless Frontier has a lot of potential for players. Once everything is unlocked, though, there are so many options it can be overwhelming – except for the Behemoth, which is clearly powerful. I’m eager to see what the Destiny 2 community thinks, and whether the effort to earn new loot will be worth it. If the gear is good for creating new character builds and the weapons have useful traits, this could become a very popular activity.
