The expansion for Destiny 2, titled Edge of Fate, isn’t just another chapter in the ongoing narrative; it marks a significant shift, even a new epoch, for the franchise. This new phase has been a mix of joy and sorrow, as many aspects that players cherished about Destiny 2 have undergone swift modifications, which undoubtedly stirred up some feelings among fans.
As a dedicated Destiny 2 player, I must share my thoughts on the latest changes introduced in The Edge of Fate expansion – particularly the conclusion of support for the Gambit game mode. In retrospect, its abrupt ending might have been foreseeable due to its dwindling popularity. However, this closure has left a noticeable void that none of the current offerings have quite managed to fill.
Even the new Sieve game mode, which seems like a suitable replacement for Gambit, falls short compared to the latter’s appeal. Despite Sieve’s strengths, it’s hard not to compare and find it lacking when stacked against the unique charm of Gambit.
Destiny 2’s ‘Gambit Hiatus’ Leaves a Big Void That No Other Game Mode Can Quite Fill
Before the release of Destiny 2’s Edge of Fate expansion, Bungie announced in a blog post (previously known as the ‘TWAB’) that Gambit would be on an indefinite break. This means that while Gambit can still be played within Destiny 2, there will be no further updates or rewards associated with it during The Edge of Fate expansion.
Bungie mentioned that Gambit will come back, featuring fresh rewards and enhanced mechanics, although its present situation remains unfortunate at the moment.
Reflecting on the absence of Gambit in Destiny 2, it’s hard not to see its past through rose-colored lenses, glossing over its imperfections to cherish the fond memories instead. While it wasn’t flawless, Gambit was unique in the world of Destiny 2, offering an exhilarating mix of Player vs. Player (PvP) and Player vs. Environment (PvE), providing a level of competition and combat unmatched by other game modes. Therefore, the hiatus of Gambit is deeply felt for numerous reasons, going far beyond just the annoyance of the Destiny Content Vault reappearing once more.
Destiny 2’s New Sieve Game Mode is Gambit’s Spiritual Successor
In the current phase of Destiny 2, known as the Year of Prophecy, Siege serves as a substitute for Gambit until it makes its comeback. Yet, many players argue that Siege fails to match the esteemed status Gambit held during its prime years.
Acknowledging its merits, the latest game mode in Destiny 2, Sieve, is commendable for providing innovative means for players to employ Darkmatter abilities on Kepler. However, it’s important to note that these Darkmatter abilities have been met with mixed reactions from the Destiny 2 community, which in turn has made Sieve a contentious choice due to its compulsory integration of these abilities. Consequently, Sieve doesn’t stand out significantly when compared to the myriad of new and returning game modes within Destiny 2’s Portal activity hub.
Destiny 2’s Gambit Game Mode Set Impossible Standard for Sieve to Compete With
Over time, Destiny 2 has featured numerous unique game modes. However, Sieve doesn’t seem to stand out as exceptional compared to others. Conversely, Gambit, even if you don’t enjoy it, is undeniably distinctive within a vast ocean of game modes that share many similarities. Unfortunately, with Gambit currently on hold, there’s nothing else quite like it to fill the gap it left behind. In essence, Sieve might not provide the same level of excitement or uniqueness as Gambit does.
