A petition for a Destiny 3 has gained a surprising amount of support following the announcement that Destiny 2 will no longer receive updates – it has more signatures than the number of current players in Bungie’s Marathon! Even before Marathon became successful, Destiny fans feared that Bungie would be forced to choose between developing one game or the other. This concern arose because Bungie was already facing challenges when Marathon launched, including accusations of plagiarism, internal management problems, prior staff reductions, and a significant drop in Destiny 2’s player base.
On top of everything else, player spirits began to fall as fans requested improvements that either didn’t happen or weren’t substantial enough when they did. Many felt the story concluded with The Final Shape, and even those who continued playing still found problems with the game. This likely led to the announcement of a final update for Destiny 2 in June 2026. However, fans aren’t happy with this ending and have started a petition asking Sony to create a sequel.
Destiny 3 Petition Gets 190,000 Signatures, More Than Marathon’s Player Peak
A petition for a third Destiny game has gained significant traction, with nearly 190,000 unique signatures as of today. Interestingly, this number surpasses the peak concurrent player count for the game Marathon, which was estimated to be between 130,000 and 150,000. According to a source at Bungie who spoke with Paul Tassi, Marathon had roughly twice as many players on Steam as on consoles.

When Marathon was most popular on Steam, it had about 88,000 players, which would equal roughly 132,000 players overall. This number could have been higher at launch, potentially around 150,000. Considering the Destiny 3 petition gained 190,000 signatures in only two days, it suggests that Destiny 2 still has a lot of unrealized potential and its cancellation was a missed opportunity.
Many Destiny 2 players are saddened by the likely end of the game, feeling it was special and may not be replicated. While a Destiny 3 isn’t impossible, it’s currently not in development and with recent layoffs at Bungie, it would likely be drastically different. Players anticipate potential changes like significant time skips, recasting of beloved characters, the removal of certain characters, altered gameplay, and a completely new approach to how the game is updated and supported.

This game and the entire series has meant a lot to players around the world, so it’s understandable to see so much discussion about it ending. For instance, the developers of Destiny 2 seemed to say goodbye to both the game and its community through a special message hidden in the game over the weekend. While it’s uncertain if the petition for Destiny 3 will have any impact, fans have one last chance to show their support for Destiny 2 on June 9th when the final update is released, hoping to boost the number of players one last time.
