As a seasoned Destiny player with countless hours spent traversing the cosmos and battling hordes of alien foes, I must say this latest development has left me both puzzled and intrigued. The rumors of Destiny 3’s cancellation have been debunked, but not in quite the way we expected – it seems a spinoff was axed instead.

An insider has debunked recent Destiny 3 cancelation rumors by revealing that the game wasn’t even in development. Destiny 3 was the highly-awaited rumored sequel to 2017’s online FPS title, Destiny 2.

On July 31, there were significant layoffs at video game developer Bungie for the second time within less than a year. This event sparked speculation that the decision might have resulted in the cancellation of the successor to Destiny 2, which was rumored to be the project known as “Payback.” However, recent reports suggest that the scrapped game may not have been the sequel to Destiny 2 that fans had feared.

On Twitter, Jason Schreier, an insider in the industry, stated that there wasn’t a Destiny 3 game being developed because it had never begun production in the first place. He made it clear that the axed project was actually a spin-off game within the Destiny universe, not a direct sequel to Destiny 2. Schreier further added that the team had only done preliminary work on this spin-off title. Additionally, he confirmed through a comment that the project was canceled prior to the layoffs, which occurred some time ago.

Bungie Not Developing Destiny 3 But Still Focused on the Franchise

As a passionate fan, I’ve been following Bungie closely, and today, the news from Chairman and CEO Pete Parsons’s blog post has me even more excited about our beloved game, Destiny. Although we might not see Destiny 3 right away, Parsons made it clear that Destiny remains a top priority for the studio. He shared that Bungie developers will pour all their energy “entirely” into Destiny and the Marathon reboot in the time ahead. In this same letter, he revealed that over 850 dedicated team members are currently working on these two projects. So, fellow fans, let’s gear up and prepare for an incredible future with Destiny!

Bungie underwent another round of staff reductions recently, marking the second time they’ve reduced their workforce within a short period, following layoffs in October 2023. Interestingly, this is the second time Bungie has carried out mass layoffs since it was acquired by Sony in 2022. Surprisingly, these cuts occurred despite the American developer’s triumph with the release of Destiny 2‘s latest DLC, The Final Shape.

Despite a recent development at Bungie that may cause concern, their firm dedication to both Destiny and Marathon could be interpreted as a positive sign. Although fans might have to endure a longer wait for Destiny 3, they can likely take comfort in knowing that the developer will likely continue investing its efforts into enhancing Destiny 2 and generating valuable content for the Destiny 2 open-world looter-shooter game.
