Destiny Rising Announced for Mobile As F2P Title

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I must admit that the announcement of Destiny: Rising has stirred a mix of excitement and skepticism within me. On one hand, I’ve been a devoted fan of the Destiny franchise since its inception, and the prospect of taking it on-the-go is tantalizing. However, the history of successful console-to-mobile adaptations is not exactly spotless, leaving room for concern.

The beloved Destiny series from Bungie is now set to make its debut on smartphones. As announced today, Bungie is partnering with skilled mobile developer NetEase (known for Dead by Daylight Mobile and Naraka Bladepoint) to create Destiny: Rising, a free-to-play game that aims to deliver the Destiny gaming experience to mobile gamers.

Destiny: Rising is set in an alternate version of events, where fresh narratives, characters, skills, and other elements unfold. The announcement came with a trailer showcasing footage captured during preliminary gameplay stages.

Starting November 1, the first closed alpha test for the free-to-play game begins, though no specific release date has been given yet. Interested players can register to try out the game on either iOS or Android devices. Alongside the announcement trailer, the developers have also shared a “Developer Preview,” where NetEase discusses Destiny: Rising and their objectives in developing the mobile adaptation of this franchise.

What Is Destiny: Rising About?

The Story

In the world of Destiny: Rising, I find myself stepping into an alternate reality, years before the events of Destiny 1 and 2. This unique timeline offers a fresh perspective on how humanity began to rise from the ruins of the Collapse – a time when extraterrestrial invaders snuffed out what was once our golden age.

Instead of a fallen deity, let’s call it “the Traveler,” which once descended from the heavens and now shines its radiance to generate spectral beings known as Ghosts. These Ghosts are on a quest to find lost remnants of humanity and resurrect them as Lightbearers – extraordinary beings gifted with distinct powers, achieving immortality in the process.

Our story unfolds as we enter an era where humanity is leaving its troubled past behind and constructing the basis for what will eventually be known as The Last City. As survivors find solace, they congregate in safe havens such as Haven, working towards a brighter future and bolstering their defenses against the lingering dangers on Earth.

Characters and Classes

In terms of distinctive elements, NetEase asserts that Destiny: Rising’s exceptional backdrop allows players to experience some of the franchise’s iconic Lightbearers during their early developmental years. Characters like Ikora Rey, young Kabr, and the Iron Lord Jolder are among those anticipated in the game, with a significant point being that you can actually control these characters. NetEase hints that this mobile game takes place before the Guardians were completely established, suggesting that the traditional Destiny 2 classes may not be featured. For the closed alpha, there will be 11 unique characters to choose from, but NetEase has already indicated that more will be added in due time.

Will Destiny: Rising Feature PvP?

In Destiny’s mobile game, both Player vs. Environment (PvE) and Player vs. Player (PvP) modes will be available. Notably, a fresh PvP mode named Shifting Gates has been designed exclusively for this mobile adaptation, which Alpha testers can look forward to experiencing.

Is it likely that Destiny players would eagerly try out a mobile adaptation of the game series? To find out, we’ll need to observe the response to the alpha release first, as this will help us gauge player interest.
