Details On Romero Games’ Xbox Title

In July, Microsoft and Xbox implemented significant layoffs, and Romero Games was heavily affected. The studio, founded by John Romero – the creator of Doom and co-founder of Id Software – was working on a new game under a publishing agreement with Xbox.

So, that deal we were all excited about fell through over the summer, and honestly, it left the future of Romero Games pretty uncertain. I even heard whispers that the studio might close down because the funding got yanked, but they quickly shot that down. Thankfully, Romero Games pushed forward and is still going strong.

By December, Romero announced the studio was still active and even working on a new game. Fans were curious about the previous game in development, and details have been hard to come by. However, TopMob has recently uncovered some information about it.

Originally revealed on the TopMob Weekly podcast (Episode 44), the game, then called “Hellslayer,” was a first-person shooter about a priest battling demons. Gameplay was designed to be fast-paced, similar to Hotline Miami – dying would immediately restart the level. According to insiders, the project had been in development for almost ten years, but was recently cancelled to allow the team to focus on a new game.

So, they’re making a new game, and it’s a total overhaul of the original, but they’re not building it completely from the ground up. I heard from Romero at a panel last month that while they’re reusing some stuff from the first game, it’s actually going to be a different experience than what they initially intended. It’s cool they’re evolving the idea, but it’s not a simple rehash either.

TopMob knows about some of the game’s features, but they’re keeping them secret to protect their source. Romero mentioned that this new game is unlike anything he’s played before, and fans of classic Id Software games will probably find a lot to like in it when it’s released.
