Dev Sentenced to Prison: Will Fortune’s Run Ever Be Completed?

Summary

  • Development of the Steam FPS Fortune’s Run has been halted due to the creator’s 3-year prison sentence.
  • The game is now in early access limbo.

Supporters of the first-person shooter game “Fortune’s Run” on Steam may find themselves waiting longer than expected for its full release, as the game’s creator has been sentenced to prison for three years. Unlike typical delays in development for Steam games, which often stem from financial constraints or technical hurdles, this project is halted due to the developer being incarcerated.

Prior to learning about its creator’s incarceration, “Fortune’s Run” had garnered moderate popularity on Steam. The game boasts a “Very Positive” rating, with numerous players appreciating its vintage aesthetic and innovative mechanics, despite being in an early development phase. Unfortunately, any forthcoming updates could face delays. Titles like “Half-Life 2” have persevered through development purgatory before, so there’s hope that “Fortune’s Run” may continue, but its future is unclear.

The sole developer of Fortune’s Run, known as Dizzie, disclosed some unexpected news through an update on Steam on January 14. Without any delay, Dizzie revealed that they had been given a three-year prison sentence, which will halt development until their release. Although the specific crime wasn’t mentioned, Dizzie did admit to being violent during that part of their life prior to working on Fortune’s Run. It’s not common for game development to be postponed due to a prison sentence, as Dizzie isn’t the only video game figure to encounter legal issues recently; streamer Johnny Somali has also been apprehended in South Korea and is facing jail time.

Progress on Fortune’s Run Won’t Continue Until Developer Is Released From Prison

Originally, Fortune’s Run had more than one team member. However, due to recent developments, one member has departed from the project following a complicated surgery and expressing a lack of enthusiasm for game development. Consequently, Dizzie is currently the sole individual working on the game, leading to a halt in its progression until further notice. The projected release date from early access on Steam is still set for 2026, but it seems unlikely that this timeline will be met now. Nevertheless, considering Satisfactory took more than five years to exit early access, a delay of three years for Fortune’s Run would not be surprising within the indie game community.

In the post, Dizzie made it clear that they aim to complete the game once released from prison. Until then, players can continue enjoying the game as it is currently available. Meanwhile, there are numerous impressive early-access shooter games on Steam that could serve as alternatives while Dizzie works on resuming development.
