Extremely OK Games regrettably announced the cancellation of their highly anticipated game, Earthblade. This title was initially unveiled in 2021 by the team behind Celeste, but due to numerous delays, internal complications, and other factors, they’ve decided to halt production on the project. Sadly, fans eagerly awaiting Earthblade will now have to keep an eye out for future projects from Extremely OK Games.
Initially, Extremely OK’s team aimed to complete the project named Earthblade by the end of 2022, anticipating a release in 2023. However, during the game’s production process, challenges such as heavy workload and technical hurdles surfaced within the studio. Despite these difficulties being shared with fans, they generally remained optimistic about the situation. Regrettably, these issues eventually led to the cancellation of Earthblade.
Back in January of 2025, I was heartbroken to learn that Extremely OK Games had decided to cancel their upcoming title, Earthblade. In a blog post on their website, creator Maddy Thorson shared that this tough decision was made back in December 2024, but they felt it was best to wait until the new year to inform the public.
The cancellation is partly due to internal disagreements concerning the IP rights for our beloved game, Celeste. Though we eventually resolved the conflict, it unfortunately led to one of the founding members of Extremely OK leaving the studio. This wasn’t the only reason behind Earthblade’s cancellation – delays in its release beyond 2024 hinted at issues within development even before the team fractured. However, that split might have been the final blow.
I’m hoping for the best for the rest of the Extremely OK Games team and can’t wait to see what they create next!
Extremely OK Games Cancels Earthblade But Will Release Other Projects in the Future
As a gamer, I’ve been following our journey at Extremely OK Games. Losing one of our core team members made us pause and reconsider the development of Earthblade. We asked ourselves if the strain it was causing was worth it, given the slow progress we were making. In the end, we realized that it had been too much of a struggle for us to continue working on Earthblade. But fear not! This isn’t the end for Extremely OK Games. Instead, we’re going to shift our focus towards smaller-scale projects and aim to create new titles just like we did with Celeste and Towerfall.
Information about any upcoming projects from Extremely OK may not be released immediately, given that they are beginning anew following the cancellation of Earthblade. Fans have had to endure similar disappointments lately too, as Reflector scrapped their franchise plans after the initial release of Unkown 9: Awakening underperformed.
