As a lifelong fan of Dexter Morgan, I must say that this new reboot, Original Sin, has truly captured my heart (and my darkest desires). The writing, acting, and plot twists have been nothing short of exceptional.
Warning! This article contains spoilers from Dexter: Original Sin Episode 4.
Summary
- Young Dexter’s inexperience leads to more mistakes than ever, making his journey compelling and unexpected.
- Flashbacks from the 1970s continue to enrich the story, revealing key character dynamics and tragic events.
- Guest appearance by Joe Pantoliano as a mob hitman adds intrigue and foreshadows significant developments in the plot.
As we approach the midpoint of the premiere season of “Dexter: Original Sin,” things are heating up with young Dexter stumbling in his attempts to adhere to Harry’s teachings. The 1970s flashbacks remain effective at fleshing out Harry’s intriguing history, while the 90s probe into the murder of the little boy presents one of the most grisly crime scenes ever depicted within the Dexter universe.
In this installment titled ‘Fender Bender’, I had the pleasure of following Monica Raymund’s skilled direction and Nick Zayas’ thoughtful script. This captivating episode premiered on both Paramount+ and Showtime on December 27th. Notably, it featured a distinguished guest role by the legendary Joe Pantoliano from The Sopranos, who portrayed a mob enforcer that caught Dexter’s eye as someone deserving of his kill list.
Dexter Morgan’s Inexperience Makes This Episode Of Original Sin All The More Compelling

One aspect that adds intrigue to Patrick Gibson’s portrayal of Dexter Morgan stands out: his unpolished skills, both as a novice at Miami Metro Police Department and as an emerging serial killer. Unlike the original series, the blunders in Original Sin surpass what we saw earlier. The fact that Dexter is still learning to control his dark side makes it even more captivating to see how he navigates his future actions. Furthermore, the weekly flashbacks to the 1970s timeline serve as mini episodes, and they continue to be engaging, with Harry’s narrative being equally crucial in Original Sin as Dexter’s.
Despite the audience already aware of Laura Moser’s tragic end as Dexter’s mother, witnessing the lead-up provides crucial insights and intensifies the sorrow of her demise. The scene where Brian (later known as the Ice Truck Killer) decapitates his victims in the garden is spine-chilling, given the character’s future actions.
The Mystery Big Bad Is A Different Step For Original Sin And The Exciting Cliffhanger Makes This The Best Episode So Far
Initially, Dexter’s chosen victim for the week appears somewhat forced, lacking in connection or significance. Yet, he persistently seeks someone to kill, eventually unearthing a potential target. This leads him to encounter Mad Dog (played by Joe Pantoliano), a former mob assassin rumored to be planning another murder, extending his list of victims. For fans familiar with The Sopranos, it’s as if they’ve glimpsed what Ralph Cifaretto could have become had he not succumbed to Tony Soprano’s grasp years prior. The character’s brief yet impactful portrayal by the esteemed actor adds depth to the scene, and by the episode’s close, the importance of this kill becomes evident, making the seemingly random setup seem justifiable.
No, don’t. Not the Clapton
In a repeat display of charisma, Patrick Gibson flawlessly takes over Michael C. Hall’s role as Dexter, making it seem effortless for the rising Irish actor. His performance in Original Sin is commendable. This week, the supporting characters, excluding Harry and Debra, don’t have significant roles, but a Masuka scene involving cantaloupes is priceless and justifies his iconic laughter that follows.
