Meanwhile, the chief of Miami Metro Homicide, Aaron Spencer, grappled with the harrowing abduction of his son. In a different time, the 70s flashbacks marked Debra Morgan’s birth, while Harry’s affair with Laura Moser intensified dramatically. The undercover operation to dismantle the cartel took an unexpected and startling twist.

In this installment, Michael Lehmann was in charge of the direction, while Terry Huang handled the scriptwriting. This intriguing episode premiered on January 10, 2025, on Paramount+ along with Showtime, under the title ‘The Joy Of Killing’. It offers a blend of grim and twisted elements, interspersed with moments that will make you laugh out loud. In the aftermath of my brief diversion from the Miami Metro Homicide’s primary case last week, the second half of Original Sin‘s inaugural season unfolds with a nerve-wracking sequence where Aaron Spencer’s son gets abducted. The villain’s identity is shrouded in mystery for both the main characters and us viewers, making this an intriguing enigma that sets it apart from any previous mysteries in the Dexter-verse. The gloomy start takes a turn when Patrick GIbson’s spot-on portrayal as Dexter Morgan brings some needed humor into the story. Initially, there were doubts about an unknown actor stepping into the shoes once filled by Michael C. Hall, but those concerns vanished the moment Gibson graced our screens in Dexter: Original Sin. By this episode, he’s proven himself to be the authentic embodiment of a serial killer with a moral compass.

One of the most amusing sequences featured in the prequel thus far is when Dexter and his romantic interest, Sofia, partake in a double date with Debra and Gio. The humor here stems not only from Dexter’s unquenchable appetite for food but also from the contrast between his darker aspects and lighter moments. The show effectively blends these humorous instances with Dexter’s more sinister side, known as his ‘dark passenger.’

Each murder Dexter commits demonstrates an increasingly refined technique, as he consistently applies Harry’s code. However, it is the mistakes he repeatedly makes in disposing of his victims that keep these scenes captivating and distinct from the original series.

Original Sin’s New Supporting Characters Are Still Largely Missing In Action But Patrick Dempsey Does Get A Chance To Shine

In this episode, Sarah Michelle Gellar’s character, Tanya Martin, seems to be intentionally sidelined for a dramatic climax later on. On the other hand, Bobby Watt, who appears underdeveloped in the 90s narrative, plays a larger role in the 1970s timeline. To make up for the lack of development in established characters, the creators are likely to introduce intriguing new characters in the second half of the season. As for Masuka and Batista, they have minimal roles in this episode, but their future storylines are well-known, so it’s not as noticeable at the moment. This week, Aaron Spencer (played by Patrick Dempsey) has been given significant screen time, placing him right at the heart of the main plot, with his personal connection to the kidnapping case allowing him to showcase his acting abilities more prominently.

In the initial series, Aaron Spencer wasn’t featured at all. Consequently, his storyline in “Original Sin” remains uncertain, fitting perfectly for his season finale arc. This episode reinforces the bond between Aaron and Harry Morgan, as they engage in a solemn drink in Harry’s office. However, there’s a noticeable inconsistency – Spencer’s character becomes deeply entangled in the search for his own son, a development that seems unrealistic, even considering 90s standards. It appears as though this plot device is manipulated to reveal Aaron’s anger and distress. Regardless, Dempsey delivers an effective performance. For future episodes, it could be more engaging if Spencer decides to operate independently – ditching the formal attire and working the case undercover alongside Harry Morgan. To summarize, another exceptional episode!
