As someone who grew up with Dexter Morgan as a staple of my TV-watching years, I must say that Dexter: Original Sin has hit all the right notes for me. The return to the iconic title sequence was a welcome one, harkening back to the original series while still feeling fresh and unique.
The new series “Dexter: Original Sin” made a grand debut on Paramount+ in collaboration with Showtime, delighting fans as they delve into Dexter’s early life origins. While there are many changes compared to the original series, there are also familiar elements that resonate. For example, the opening title sequence harks back to its roots, featuring the same music and a morning routine that is reminiscent of the original, yet updated with a 90s vibe and the inclusion of characters such as Harry and Debra Morgan.
When “Dexter: New Blood” debuted in 2021, it sported a completely fresh appearance, boasting a new opening credits scene and backdrop. On the other hand, “Original Sin” is back to the legendary locale of Miami, which also brings back the renowned title sequence. This nostalgic touch is combined with a new twist to create a sense of familiarity tinged with something unique for the fans.
Original Sin’s Title Sequence Is Very Similar To The First Show With A Few Quirky Twists

In a clever homage to the original, Original Sin has revamped the opening title sequence of Dexter. Instead of showcasing the polished routine of Miami’s serial killer, it presents a raw and unrefined morning ritual for the young Dexter. The scene begins with him struggling to swat at a fly instead of efficiently eliminating it like his older counterpart played by Michael C. Hall. This subtle nod implies that our younger protagonist hasn’t yet honed his deadly skills as precisely as he will in the future.
Hello Dexter Morgan
In a nod to the original, the title card for ‘Dexter’ remains the same but now includes the subtitle “Original Sin.” The story then takes an unexpected turn as Harry Morgan’s shave replaces Dexter’s in the initial scene, and instead of refined droplets of blood, his cut results in splatters into the sink. This could suggest that Dexter’s tidy serial killer persona is still a work in progress. Following this, we see teenage Debra Morgan compiling her ’90s mix tape and chatting on a vintage phone from the same era. Breakfast and coffee get a ’90s makeover next, before the Morgan family dresses up and exits their house to start the day. The sequence concludes with Dexter’s signature glance, and we move onto the episode.
The Title Sequence Is Actually A Bit Different To The One That Was Teased A Few Months Ago
At the Dexter: Original Sin event held at San Diego Comic Con in August 2024, a sneak peek of the opening scene was unveiled, but it deviated noticeably from the one fans watched when the prequel premiered its inaugural episode just a week prior. The iconic theme by Daniel Licht received a notable rework, and while many beats remained consistent – such as the unsuccessful fly swat, Harry’s shave, and food preparation – there were subtle variations. In this revised version, Dexter notices the phone cord encircling Debra’s neck and departs the house dressed in his graduation attire. This segment was omitted since it wouldn’t reflect Dexter’s appearance during the season as a whole. Instead, the authentic opening scene portrays Dexter heading to his internship at Miami Metro Homicide wearing casual clothes.
Opting for the same score as Daniel Licht’s initial composition in the original series is an intriguing move, considering the longing among fans for that nostalgic connection following the significant changes in “New Blood.” This decision might have been driven by this desire for familiarity, which makes it somewhat understandable. On the other hand, the revamped score had a funky vibe and a retro charm to it, and keeping it would’ve added an exciting twist. Preliminary screenings could have influenced this choice, or it could be a creative shift during production aimed at strengthening the prequel’s connection to the original series. Regardless of the reason, its debut was unexpected yet not entirely unwelcome.
