  • Returning to Miami in Dexter: Resurrection could bring back legacy characters and tie up the series’ loose ends.

As a die-hard fan of the original Dexter series who has spent countless hours immersed in the dark and twisted world of Miami’s most notorious serial killer, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement at the prospect of Dexter: Resurrection filming in my beloved city next year. The thought of Michael C. Hall once again stepping into the shoes of Dexter Morgan, with his dark wit and deadly charm, is almost too much to bear.

The sequel series titled “Dexter: Resurrection” will commence filming in January 2025, and it’s anticipated that the show will hit screens during summer of the same year. Actor Michael C. Hall is set to reprise his role as Dexter, reuniting with his dark alter ego following the events depicted in “Dexter: New Blood“. While the exact locations for most of the new series remain undisclosed, it’s suggested that “Dexter: Resurrection” will once again bring us back to the emblematic setting of Miami, Florida at some point throughout the show. This city may hold the answers to how the serial killer’s tale concludes.

As a dedicated fan, I’m eagerly anticipating that the continuation of Dexter’s story, titled Dexter: Resurrection, will likely kick off in the fictitious town of Iron Lake, Upstate New York. This is where our anti-hero Dexter currently lies critically wounded, having been shot by his son Harrison in the gripping finale of Dexter: New Blood. Yet, if Dexter manages to recover from these near-fatal injuries and decides to flee, he could potentially end up anywhere. A swift return to Miami might not be on the cards for Dexter given his extensive history of crimes in Florida. However, the vibrant backdrop of Miami was a defining feature in the original Dexter series, and it holds a rich tapestry of stories waiting to be unraveled in Dexter: Resurrection.

Miami Holds The Key To Dexter’s Potential Fate

Dexter: Resurrection Needs To Return To This Iconic Location

In “Dexter: New Blood,” we find Dexter, now going by Jim Lindsay, settling down in a quiet town called Iron Lake, upstate New York. This is quite a change from his previous life in the vibrant and glamorous Miami, Florida where the original “Dexter” series took place. The tropical heat and humidity of Miami are swapped for the biting cold of Iron Lake, and in the climactic scenes of “Dexter: New Blood,” we see Dexter lying injured on the icy forest floor before his final moments.

Interestingly enough, it might have been the freezing conditions that aided Dexter Morgan in living through a gunshot wound to his chest. Michael C. Hall hinted at this in an interview with Variety following the revelation at San Diego Comic Con 2024 about his comeback in Dexter: Resurrection. Despite Iron Lake being a fantastic setting for Dexter: New Blood, many viewers yearned for Dexter’s old stomping grounds in Miami. If Dexter: Resurrection decides to go back to the legendary setting of Miami, it must do so in a way that serves the narrative.

In the potential finale of Dexter’s tale, there is a compelling rationale for his return to sunny Florida in “Dexter: Resurrection.” Showrunner Clyde Phillips shared an alternate ending he would have proposed if he had continued on the show beyond its initial conclusion in 2013. This hypothetical scenario placed Dexter on the execution table at the Florida Penitentiary. If “Dexter: Resurrection” decides to follow this path when it concludes, it could mean that Dexter goes back to Miami to face his execution, with the death penalty serving as the fitting retribution for the crimes he committed in the state of Florida.

Regardless of how Dexter: Resurrection chooses to conclude the series, Miami remains a compelling choice for its final location. Since Dexter was born there and his past traumas are deeply tied to this city, it could serve as an effective setting for flashbacks related to his first kill or his mother’s murder. Although the ending doesn’t necessarily have to occur in Miami, having it set here would add a meaningful touch to the storyline.

A Return To Miami Could Bring Legacy Characters Back

The upcoming prequel series titled “Dexter: Original Sin” will find its way back to sunny Miami, Florida, and is set to air in December 2024. This revival promises a wave of nostalgia for fans as they witness a young Dexter in his forensic gear, working alongside younger versions of familiar characters. In the storyline of “Dexter: Resurrection”, Angel Batista (David Zayas) is now the Captain of Miami Metro Homicide. A hint dropped in “Dexter: New Blood” also suggests that Detective Joey Quinn (Desmond Harrington) and lab geek Vince Masuka (C. S Lee) are still living in Miami, continuing their work with the police department.

It’s quite plausible that the upcoming series, “Dexter: Resurrection,” will reintroduce some of Dexter’s most beloved characters. However, all three of these fan favorites are strongly connected to Miami, so a return to their familiar surroundings seems likely. In the final episode of “Dexter: New Blood,” Angel Batista was heading towards Iron Lake, but given his role as Captain of Miami Metro Homicide, he may need to go back to Miami at some point. If Batista is to have a substantial role in “Dexter: Resurrection” (and it’s hoped he will), Miami might once again become a recurring location in the Dexter universe.
