Summary
- Lack of long-term planning impacted Dexter’s spinoff series.
- Debra Morgan’s emotional balance will be missed.
- Dexter’s strong bond with Debra won’t be replicated in the spinoff.
As a die-hard fan of Dexter, I thought the story of America’s beloved serial killer had reached its end when the show concluded after eight gripping seasons. However, with Dexter Morgan miraculously surviving at the finale, who would have guessed that the franchise would flourish as it has today, boasting numerous spin-off series and another one in the works? It seems like this was a long-term plan, but truth be told, it’s quite surprising how things turned out.
It seems clear now that the conclusions drawn in the final season of the original series suggest there were no plans for Dexter to return. However, with the blood spatter analyst coming back in Dexter: Resurrection, it’s becoming evident that the series lacks a sustained vision, which could potentially harm this spinoff.
Dexter: Resurrection Will Be Impacted By Dexter’s Final Episode
A Major Character Was Killed Off

As the last season of Dexter approached, it was clear that the story was winding down, with the writers carefully tying up loose ends. Dexter was preparing for a new life in Argentina, and plot holes were being neatly addressed to provide a fulfilling conclusion, although one that wouldn’t be happy. However, things took an unexpected turn when Dexter decided to part ways from his son in Argentina with his girlfriend, and tragically killed his sister, Debra Morgan. Despite her being the closest person to him throughout the series, she was on the brink of a joyful ending with Joey Quinn, only to be shot instead. The aftermath of a fatal bullet wound left her alive but suffering from severe complications, which Dexter didn’t want her to endure. Out of mercy, he shut down her life support in the hospital and ultimately disposed of her body in the ocean, following his usual method for dealing with victims.
The ending was a surprising turn of events, suggesting that at that moment, no long-term planning was in place by the writers. It seemed unlikely they would have killed off Debra given the possibility of future seasons, as she was one of the most significant characters, following only Dexter himself throughout the eight seasons. Her death served as a powerful emotional climax for the finale and led to Dexter’s decision to fake his own death due to his guilt over her predicament. However, with Debra no longer alive, it may be challenging for the new series to develop Dexter’s character and life in the same depth as before.
Debra Morgan Was Key To Dexter’s Success
She Provided A Great Emotional Balance

As a devoted fan, I can’t emphasize enough the pivotal role Debra played in the original show. She offered a perfect counterpoint to Dexter, often reining him in when he was on the verge of losing control. Her writing was always exceptional, with her frequent use of profanity adding a healthy dose of humor that perfectly balanced the series’ darker elements. Debra was also a stark contrast to Dexter in terms of emotions; while he was cold and guarded, she wore her heart on her sleeve, expressing every emotion vividly. This emotional openness resonated with viewers, providing us with a character we could relate to as we shared similar feelings. Essentially, Debra served as an empathetic connection, allowing us to live vicariously through her experiences.
In the TV show “Dexter,” she was also a significant figure in police work, balancing the storylines with the forensics team, especially the detectives who were pursuing criminals within the law. This added an exciting element to the series, providing relief from Dexter’s grim personal life and maintaining a healthy mix of light and dark themes. However, as she is absent from “Dexter: Resurrection,” there are concerns that the balance might be off-kilter, potentially causing the show to veer too heavily towards darkness.
Her Presence Is Going To Be Missed In Dexter: Resurrection
It Will Be Hard To Find The Same Bond

Debra held a significant role in Dexter’s life as she was the only character who could reach him emotionally. Despite losing his wife, multiple romantic interests, his brother, and friends during the series, it was only when Debra was in peril or upset that Dexter showed true vulnerability. He went to great lengths to safeguard her, which added depth to his character, revealing a compassionate side hidden beneath his cold exterior. This aspect of him made Dexter appealing to many viewers, and the upcoming series, Dexter: Resurrection, might miss out on this crucial element.
As a devoted cinephile, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment when contemplating the upcoming Dexter spinoff, knowing that Debra’s son is taking her place instead. The connection between Dexter and Debra was profound, something audiences witnessed unfold over eight seasons of growth and development. Replicating that relationship seems an arduous task, if not impossible.
Had we known that a Dexter revival was on the cards, I believe she would have been kept alive to maintain continuity and be part of the series. Alas, it appears that Dexter: Resurrection will lack Debra’s presence, a loss that may resonate more profoundly than some might expect.
