Dexter Star Self-Confirms HBO Harry Potter Casting

Worldwide muggles are eagerly anticipating HBO’s Harry Potter television series, given the widespread appeal of this enchanting franchise. Until now, details about the upcoming Harry Potter show have been scarce, but recently, a well-known actor from Dexter has announced their involvement in the project, confirming their role for the show.

Discussions about the casting for the series have been a hot topic among Harry Potter enthusiasts, but speculation about who will portray Professor Albus Dumbledore can finally cease. Although not yet officially announced by HBO, it appears that the character of Dumbledore from Hogwarts, previously played by Michael Gambon and Richard Harris in the films, has been cast for the upcoming television adaptation.

Over the past week, I’ve learned that the esteemed John Lithgow has been cast as the legendary wizard in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series. In a recent interview with Screen Rant, he shared his excitement about this role, stating: “The news came as quite a shock to me. During the Sundance Film Festival, I received an unexpected call regarding another film project. It wasn’t an easy choice because this role will significantly shape my final years in the industry. However, I’m thrilled about it! Some remarkable individuals are breathing new life into Harry Potter. That’s what makes the decision so challenging. By the time we wrap up, I’ll be nearly 87 years old, but I’ve agreed to join them.

At present, Lithgow is the only actor confirmed for the Harry Potter television series. However, there are rumors swirling that Paapa Essiedu is HBO’s prime choice to portray Severus Snape. Auditions have been held for the lead characters of Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley, but as of now, the identities of those who will bring these iconic roles to life remain a mystery.

The upcoming “Harry Potter” TV series plans to devote an entire season to each novel by JK Rowling, which fans believe will provide a chance for characters and plotlines that were underrepresented in the movies to shine. Expected to premiere between late 2026 and early 2027, filming of the episodes will start in summer 2025 at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the UK, where the original films were also produced. Given that filming is set to begin soon, we can expect more cast announcements shortly.

Choosing Lithgow for the role may raise some eyebrows among franchise enthusiasts, given his American nationality, a trait not typically seen in the series’ casting history which mostly featured British actors for this specific part. Nevertheless, HBO seems confident that Lithgow can pull off this crucial role in the franchise, considering Dumbledore’s immense power. Meanwhile, Potter fans are undoubtedly thrilled as more details about the cast are being unveiled.
