In Digimon Story: Time Stranger, players need to focus on both their Digimon’s stats and their Personality. Personality plays a big role in how Digimon get stronger, learn new moves, and meet the requirements to Digivolve. It also affects how Agent Skills improve their abilities in battle and helps them gain passive skills that can significantly boost their performance in difficult fights.
It’s important for players to remember that Personalities are constantly changing, making it tricky to figure out which ones work best with their current team. This guide will explain how Personalities function and show players how to use them to develop the most powerful partners in Digimon Story: Time Stranger.
All Personalities in Digimon Story Time Stranger
In Digimon Story Time Stranger, there are four main personality traits: Valor, Philanthropy, Amicability, and Wisdom. Every Digimon starts with one of these as its Base Personality, but things like interactions and evolution can shift it into one of four different versions. Each of these versions affects how a Digimon’s stats grow, so it’s important to pay attention during conversations. A single wrong choice can change how stats increase and prevent certain evolutions.
Keeping that in mind, players should guide the conversations they have with their Digimon towards specific responses to develop the personality they prefer. Whenever a Digimon gains a level, there’s an opportunity for a Personality Change conversation, so players should be mindful of these moments, which typically occur during Recovery Mode.
Digimon kept in the Box or the Reserve area can also send you messages that ask Questions. Your answers will change their Personality, so remember that and check their messages regularly. Here’s a complete chart showing Digimon personalities and how each one impacts Stat Growth:
Main Personality | Variant | Effect | Stat Growth Factor |
---|---|---|---|
Valor | Brave | Boosts ATK and SP growth | ATK ++ SP + |
Valor | Zealous | Boosts ATK and SPD growth | ATK ++ SPD + |
Valor | Daring | Boosts ATK and DEF growth | ATK ++ DEF + |
Valor | Reckless | Boosts ATK and HP growth | ATK ++ HP + |
Philanthropy | Adoring | Boosts SPI and DEF growth | SPI ++ DEF + |
Philanthropy | Devoted | Boosts SPI and INT growth | SPI ++ INT + |
Philanthropy | Tolerant | Boosts SPI and SP growth | SPI ++ SP + |
Philanthropy | Overprotective | Boosts SPI and HP growth | SPI ++ HP + |
Amicability | Compassionate | Boosts DEF and HP growth | DEF ++ HP + |
Amicability | Sociable | Boosts DEF and SP growth | DEF ++ SP + |
Amicability | Friendly | Boosts DEF and ATK growth | DEF ++ ATK + |
Amicability | Opportunistic | Boosts DEF and SPI growth | DEF ++ SPI + |
Wisdom | Astute | Boosts INT and SPD growth | INT ++ SPD + |
Wisdom | Strategic | Boosts INT and SPI growth | INT ++ SPI + |
Wisdom | Enlightened | Boosts INT and SP growth | INT ++ SP + |
Wisdom | Sly | Boosts INT and HP growth | INT ++ HP + |
Like I was saying earlier, Digimon have what we call Base Personalities, but they aren’t set in stone. When a Digimon evolves, its personality can definitely change! For instance, my Gabumon is usually Friendly, but if he evolves into Garurumon, he could become Opportunistic if they both started with the same base Personality. But here’s where it gets really interesting: if Gabumon evolves into Black Garurumon, his core Personality might even *shift* from something like Amicability into Wisdom, making him Sly or Astute instead. So, it’s important to remember that evolutions aren’t just about stats – they can really affect how your Digimon acts! Keep that in mind when you’re deciding how to evolve them.
What Are Personality Skills in Digimon Story: Time Stranger?

Personality Skills are abilities Digimon gain as their personality changes, either slightly or into one of the four main Personality Traits. They can be learned naturally during conversations, but a Digimon can only have one active skill at a time. When a Digimon learns a new Personality Skill during a conversation, a message will ask if you want to replace the current one. You can confirm this replacement by pressing X (on PC).
Certain Personality Skills change a Digimon’s Stats permanently, or until those skills are replaced with different ones. As an example, Stout Strength increases a Digimon’s STR based on its current HP. Other skills are only active during fights; for instance, Cheer boosts ATK and INT based on the combined bond level of all allied Digimon when a battle begins. Many different skills can be very helpful in battle, and players should figure out which ones work best for how they like to play (and what their Digimon need).
As a big fan, I’ve learned that changing your Digimon’s personality isn’t set in stone! It’s mostly tied to how strong your Digimon is and what level it’s at. So, if you mess up and run out of opportunities to tweak its personality, don’t worry! You can always Devolve it and start the training process all over again. It’s a really cool system that gives you a lot of control!

Something cool I’ve learned about Digimon is that they can actually learn Personality Skills from the Valor category, even if they usually fall into Amicability or Wisdom. It’s all about how skills change through conversations with your Digimon, and I, as the Tamer, can influence those changes. If I want my Digimon to pick up a Skill from a different Personality type, I can temporarily switch my alignment, have them learn it, and then switch back to my original Personality. It’s a neat way to customize their skills!
