Game Rant interviewed Leonard Saalfrank, founder of OMYOG studio, and Dominik Hochwald, writer for FEROCIOUS, about the development of the dinosaurs featured in their game. They mentioned that creating these dinosaurs was a challenging task since they needed to be aesthetically appealing while also offering an interactive combat experience distinct from battling mercenaries or assaulting their strongholds. The end result is visually captivating dinosaurs, comparable to the best dinosaur games, featuring a combination of common and lesser-known species for players to encounter during exploration.

King Kong Served As Inspiration For The Team

Although Jurassic Park is widely recognized as the go-to property showcasing dinosaurs today, it wasn’t actually the FEROCIOUS team’s main source of inspiration. Instead, that title was held by King Kong, particularly the 2005 film directed by Peter Jackson and its associated video game. Saalfrank shared how he was enthralled by the dinosaurs in King Kong and took inspiration from them for his creations.

In this scenario, they created fictional dinosaurs that resemble their real-world counterparts, and these creatures reside exclusively on an island known as Skull Island. They serve as a speculative extension of what might have been. Our approach is similar in that we don’t delve into the past; instead, this story takes place in the present day, and the dinosaurs continue to inhabit their island home.

Similar to the dinosaurs portrayed in King Kong, those seen in FEROCIOUS aren’t entirely scientifically accurate, according to Saalfrank. Instead, they aim to create something extraordinary and convincing, while also infusing their own unique touch. The dinosaurs in the game sport feathers, a more contemporary vision of what dinosaurs might have resembled compared to the conventional image of them with scaly skin. This choice, as Saalfrank disclosed, was primarily driven by his personal preference for feathered dinosaurs.

The Dinosaurs Are An Awe-Inspiring Presence During Exploration And Combat

In the enigmatic island where players need to fight for survival with no initial resources, they will encounter various dinosaurs. Saalfrank aimed to make these dinosaurs awe-inspiring, encouraging players to pause and admire their grandeur. He was especially fond of the Amargasaurus, a massive sauropod, which he described as having an “elephantine aura” because it’s a colossal serene animal that commands respect due to its size, allowing players to peacefully circumnavigate it.

In the game FEROCIOUS, not every interaction with dinosaurs is going to be tranquil. As Saalfrank and Hochwald pointed out, players might find themselves in combat scenarios with dinosaurs, a fact they carefully integrated into the game’s first-person shooter dynamics. For instance, Raptors employ their instinctive cleverness to ambush players by sneaking up from behind. Regardless of whether FEROCIOUS‘s players decide to pursue or live harmoniously with the island’s dinosaurs, they will have numerous exciting encounters with the island’s specially designed modern-day dinosaurs, inhabiting their enigmatic island.
