Directive 8020 Dev Talks How New Gameplay Mechanics Grow The Dark Pictures Anthology

As a seasoned fan of the Dark Pictures Anthology, I eagerly anticipate the release of Directive 8020. Having played every game since Man of Medan, I can attest to Supermassive Games’ commitment to innovation and refinement with each new entry. The extra time they’ve taken to perfect this latest title is a testament to their dedication, and I’m excited to see the results.

The upcoming sci-fi horror game, “Directive 8020”, is poised to further grow the vast, interconnected universe of the “Dark Pictures Anthology”. With each new release, Supermassive Games’ series of interactive, storyline-focused games becomes increasingly ambitious, and this new title seems set to raise the bar once more. The British developer has a packed schedule, with the upcoming “The Casting of Frank Stone” and “Little Nightmares 3” slated for next year as well, but “Directive 8020” is worth highlighting due to its compelling cast and intriguing plotline.

In simpler terms, “Directive 8020” is the initial installment of the second season of the “Dark Pictures Anthology,” with its seasonal label indicating further advancements in the anthology’s mechanics. Game Rant recently had a chat with Dan McDonald, executive producer at Supermassive Games, about how earlier games in the series have impacted “Directive 8020” and how this new title refines an already polished formula.

Directive 8020 is a Natural Evolution of Supermassive Games’ Formula

The “Dark Pictures Anthology” series started with “Man of Medan” in 2019. Supermassive Games initially aimed to launch a new title annually. They successfully followed through with the subsequent releases: “Little Hope” in 2020, “House of Ashes” in 2021, and “The Devil in Me” in 2022, wrapping up Season One. By the time “Directive 8020” comes out, it will have been approximately three years, but as McDonald clarified, this extended gap has given the team ample opportunity to refine and enhance their formula.

“Our goal has been to launch a new game annually. We managed to do so for the initial four titles, but the extent of changes we aimed for in this particular game required more time. This is largely due to extensive experimentation, allowing us to ensure that the final product meets our high standards and delivers a top-notch release.”

Directive 8020 Will Feature New Mechanics

It makes sense and fans are eagerly anticipating its success. McDonald also underscored the fact that the changes in Directive 8020 are more extensive than ever before. This was evident during a gameplay demonstration, where a covert section was displayed, but McDonald clarified that while these new mechanics exist, it will still fundamentally be a Dark Pictures game.

“The game still retains the traditional elements of the Dark Pictures series, including your choices, conversations, and stunning cinematics. However, today we won’t demonstrate those aspects as you’re already familiar with them. Our aim is not just to tell another story; we have some exciting new additions in store for you.”

It seems like Directive 8020 is making an effort to create a more harmonious blend of gameplay and cinematic aspects.

Directive 8020 is scheduled for release in 2025.
