ZA/UM, known for creating the popular 2019 game Disco Elysium, has unveiled its upcoming title called C4. After years of legal challenges within their UK-based team, the creators of Disco Elysium are now offering a sneak peek into what’s in store. It appears they’re drawing inspiration from some of the world’s most renowned science fiction writers and spy novelists for this new project.
For quite some time now, gamers have pondered about the next project from ZA/UM following the significant impact of their unique RPG, Disco Elysium. The game featured an intricate web of dialogue options and skill checks, allowing players to shape the main character’s persona and beliefs. Its captivating narrative and artistic style resonated with many, leading to calls for a sequel or similar project. However, several key departures from prominent studios at ZA/UM have suggested that such a follow-up might not be forthcoming. Yet, in an unexpected turn of events, the UK-based studio has begun to share tidbits about what they’ve been secretly developing.
Approximately six years following the debut of Disco Elysium, ZA/UM has unveiled a new title called C4. This intriguing narrative revolves around espionage and team-building, unfolding in an unusual yet strangely familiar backdrop. A short teaser for the game showcases peculiar artwork that recalls ZA/UM’s previous creation; however, studio author Siim “Kosmos” Sianamäe (as reported by Eurogamer) clarifies that C4 will not be a sequel to Disco Elysium, but rather an entirely original production. Fellow writer Jim Ashilevi elaborated that C4 is, at its core, a game about espionage, complete with alliances and betrayals. Players should anticipate numerous instances of failure, as Ashilevi points out: “Failure is a hallmark of our games, and it’s no secret that spies often experience more defeats than victories.
ZA/UM Announces ‘Genre-Defining’ RPG Project C4
From a passionate enthusiast’s perspective, not much is out there about the enigmatic project known as C4, with its release date and platforms still shrouded in mystery. Fortunately, we can expect to uncover more details at the Game Developer Conference scheduled for later in March. Until then, we, the eager fans, are left to speculate as former developers of Disco Elysium venture into new territories. For instance, Longdue Games is working on a successor in spirit, while Dark Math Games is developing XXX Nightshift – a story-rich detective RPG with comparable gameplay mechanics. Regarding the latter’s release date, there seems to be some uncertainty, though a fresh trailer emerged online earlier this month, offering us a tantalizing glimpse into what’s to come.
Since its debut, the game Disco Elysium has persistently thrived. In 2021, an expanded edition of the game, titled Disco Elysium: The Final Cut, was unveiled. This enhanced version features fully-voiced characters (approximately 100 in total) and narration. Additionally, four quests initially omitted from the initial release were added, along with new artwork and animations.
