Discord says the hackers who recently attacked them don’t actually have the information they’re threatening to release.
The group that claimed responsibility for the recent hack stated they had stolen over 1.5 terabytes of data, including more than 2 million photos used for age verification. However, Discord responded to TopMob, saying this claim is significantly inaccurate and far from the truth.
I just heard from a Discord spokesperson, Nu Wexler, that they’ve found about 70,000 users whose government ID photos might have been exposed. Apparently, the people claiming responsibility for the leak are trying to blackmail Discord, so everything they’re saying should be taken with a grain of salt.
The full statement from Discord is as follows:
Hey everyone, so after last week’s news about a security issue with one of our support companies, I wanted to clear up some stuff I’m seeing online. First off, this wasn’t a hack *of* Discord itself, it was a problem with a company we use to help with customer support. Secondly, some numbers floating around are way off – they’re actually part of a blackmail attempt. We’ve figured out that around 70,000 users worldwide *might* have had photos from their IDs exposed – this happened because the support company used those IDs to look into age verification appeals. And finally, we’re not giving in to these criminals – we won’t be paying them anything.
We’ve reached out to everyone affected and are working with police, data protection officials, and security specialists to address the situation. We’ve secured our systems and stopped working with the vendor involved. Protecting your personal information is our top priority, and we apologize for any worry this has caused.
The company experienced a data loss in late September and publicly addressed it on October 3rd. They reported that usernames, email addresses, IP addresses, and a small amount of billing information were affected.
