New information about the recent Discord hack is raising more concerns for both the company and its users. According to Discord Previews, the hackers claim to have stolen a large amount of user data, including millions of user profile pictures.
Discord Previews announced on social media that the attackers responsible for a recent breach claim to have stolen 1.5 terabytes of photos used for age verification – a total of over 2.1 million images. Like in similar situations, this stolen data is now being used to try and blackmail Discord.
On October 3rd, Discord revealed that a company they work with for customer support had been hacked. This happened in late September and resulted in some user data being exposed.
- Name, Discord username, email, and other contact details if provided to Discord customer support
- Limited billing information, such as payment type, the last four digits of your credit card, and purchase history, if associated with your account
- IP addresses
- Messages with our customer service agents
- Limited corporate data (training materials, internal presentations)
Sensitive data like complete credit card numbers, security codes, personal messages, and login credentials were not affected.
Discord’s rules state that submitted IDs should be removed once age verification is finished.
Discord and k-ID don’t keep copies of your ID or video selfies. Once your age is verified, the images of your ID and the selfie used to confirm your identity are immediately deleted. The video used to estimate your age never even leaves your phone.
