Discord's Development Began Because of Final Fantasy

Key Takeaways

  • Discord was created to improve communication for Final Fantasy 11 players before expanding to include various chat features.
  • The co-creator of Discord, a Final Fantasy 14 player, hints at a potential collaboration between Discord and the MMORPG.
  • Final Fantasy 11’s impact on Discord’s development highlights the influence of older games on modern gaming platforms.

As a die-hard fan of both Final Fantasy and Discord, I can’t help but marvel at the serendipitous intertwining of these two iconic pieces of gaming history. If it weren’t for the limitations of text chat in Final Fantasy 11, we might never have experienced the seamless communication that Discord offers today. And who knows what our lives would be like without Discord? We’d probably still be frantically switching between Skype, Twitter, and Reddit to keep up with our gaming friends!

Users of Discord can partially attribute the creation of the platform to Final Fantasy games. During a recent interview, one of the creators of Discord’s chat program admitted that a specific Final Fantasy title significantly influenced its development.

Discord, as we know it today, was officially launched in 2015, though its conceptual roots go back further. While platforms like Skype were already popular for chatting, Discord stood out by offering a comprehensive chat solution in one package. This included voice chat, text chat, forum-like features, private messaging, and eventually video calls and screen sharing. Interestingly, this versatile suite of features was born out of a need expressed by one of its creators to communicate more easily with their friends while playing Final Fantasy.

In an interview with Famitsu, Stanislav Vishnevskiy – co-creator of Discord and current CTO of the company – shared insights about the app’s origins as well as his personal gaming preferences. During the conversation, Stanislav revealed that while he was a student, his passion for Final Fantasy 11, an MMORPG, drove him to create Discord’s early prototype. Being deeply engrossed in the game, he felt the need for simple communication with fellow players, as the text chat in Final Fantasy 11 had limitations on simultaneous messaging and lacked voice transmission capabilities.

Discord May See a Future Connection to a Final Fantasy MMORPG

During the chat, Stanislav delves into his discussions regarding the partnership between Final Fantasy 16 and Discord, granting a unique avatar decoration to those who played the game. Currently, he’s engrossed in playing Final Fantasy 14, a title he’s been involved with since its pre-ARR 1.0 phase. He hinted at potential future collaborations between this MMORPG and Discord. When prompted about the possibility, he suggested it was plausible but not yet confirmed, encouraging fans to keep an eye out for updates, a phrase often used by Final Fantasy 14 developer Yoshi-P when hinting at upcoming news.

Although Final Fantasy 11 is often eclipsed by its successor, Final Fantasy 14, it laid the foundation for the features and elements that would characterize the latter game. To this very day, Final Fantasy 11 remains active with a dedicated fanbase who continue to delve into the world of Vana’diel. It is safe to say that either FF11 never would have existed or Final Fantasy 14 would have appeared drastically different without it. Similarly, Discord may not have evolved in its current form if not for the experiences and lessons gained from earlier iterations.
