Summary

  • JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure‘s alternate universe includes counterparts of iconic characters with similar names, but different personalities and abilities.
  • Steel Ball Run added new depth and twists to original JoJo characters like Johnny Joestar, Gyro Zeppeli, and Diego Brando.
  • The JOJOLands introduces alternate universe versions of familiar characters like Jodio Joestar and Kishibe Rohan, who contributted to the intriguing storyline.

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is undeniably one of the finest shōnen anime and manga series globally, renowned for author Hirohiko Araki’s unending creativity and his daring approach to maintain originality and innovation, over 38 years since its debut. To put it simply, the second JoJo universe/continuity embodies these exceptional qualities perfectly.

In the realm of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, I find myself immersed in an astounding alternate universe starting from parts 7, 8, and 9! This new world is a fascinating departure, standing independently yet echoing with remnants of the old. It’s filled with characters who bear striking resemblances to their counterparts from the original series – not just in looks but also in spirit. I like to call them the “alternate universe doppelgängers.” These ten individuals are the most significant and notorious instances of this peculiar parallel existence, weaving an intricate web within the bizarre tapestry of JoJo’s universe!

10. Johnny Joestar

Jonathan Joestar’s Counterpart

  • Debut: Phantom Blood (Original), Steel Ball Run (Counterpart)

Jonathan Joestar is well-known as the initial hero of the series due to his noble and kind nature as an English gentleman with a robust physique. He excelled in the art of Hamon to defeat his adoptive brother and main adversary, Dio Brando. Despite his straightforwardness, he was a powerful character who laid the foundation for what it means to embody a JoJo.

In the world of Steel Ball Run, there’s another character who goes by the same name, but he’s more commonly recognized as Johnny Joestar. Interestingly, their characters are polar opposites. At first, Johnny was depicted as a sarcastic and melancholic jockey, struggling with lessons on humility and selflessness. His transformation, however, was remarkable, showing Araki’s significant progression as an author. Notably, Johnny excelled in the skill of Spin, which shares some similarities with Hamon, and had a fierce rivalry with Diego Brando.

9. Gyro Zeppeli

Will And Caesar’s Zeppeli Counterpart

  • Debut: Phantom Blood and Battle Tendency (Originals), Steel Ball Run (Counterpart)

As an observer, I noticed that the early chapters of the JoJo saga prominently featured the Zeppeli family. Specifically, Jonathan and Joseph each had the guidance of two significant members: Will Anthonio Zeppeli and Caesar Anthonio Zeppeli respectively. While Will served as a wise mentor to Jonathan, Caesar represented a competitive rival for Joseph. Regardless of their roles, both Zeppelis were crucial figures who significantly contributed to the refinement of the Joestars’ Hamon abilities.

In a fresh new take on the storyline, Steel Ball Run prominently showcased Gyro Zeppeli as the leading Zeppeli character. Unlike previous installments, Gyro’s role was significantly expanded, with him and Johnny being the primary figures. At times, it seemed like Gyro took on a protagonist-like role. Moreover, he imparted vital knowledge to Johnny about the Spin technique, thereby solidifying his status as one of the most admired “JoBros” throughout the entire series.

8. Diego Brando

Dio Brando’s Counterpart

  • Debut: Phantom Blood (Original), Steel Ball Run (Counterpart)

Among anime villains, none are as iconic as Dio Brando, who served as the catalyst for this epic generational saga. Originally Jonathan’s adopted brother, Dio transformed into a bloodthirsty vampire after donning the Stone Mask. His chilling presence was felt even after his death at the hands of Jonathan’s great-great-grandson, Jotaro Kujo. Remarkably, Dio continued to play significant roles in the storylines of both “Vento Aureo” and “Stone Ocean.

In the thrilling world of Steel Ball Run, I found myself captivated by the return and reimagining of beloved characters from Phantom Blood, including none other than Diego Brando, a formidable rival to Johnny and Gyro in our race’s title. However, unlike Dio, this Diego was not a villain bent on destroying the Joestar family. Rather, he emerged as an anti-hero, determined to vanquish the main antagonist alone.

His stand, Scary Monsters, was particularly intriguing because it granted him the power to transform himself or others into dinosaurs, much like Dio’s ability to create an army of zombies. The similarities were striking yet distinct, making Diego Brando a compelling and unique character in his own right.

7. Josuke Higashikata

Josuke Higashikata’s Counterpart

  • Debut: Diamond Is Unbreakable (Original), JoJolion (Counterpart)

In the series “Diamond is Unbreakable,” we’re introduced to Josuke Higashikata, Joseph Joestar’s illegitimate son. He’s a fiery young man with a flamboyant style and a hidden kindness that makes him eager to safeguard his beloved town, Morioh. With a loyal circle of friends and an extraordinary ability known as Crazy Diamond, which has healing capabilities, Josuke is ready to defend his home when duty calls.

In Part 8 of “JoJolion”, we find ourselves once again in the fictional Japanese town of Morioh, but this time with a protagonist named Josuke Higashikata who is strikingly different from his counterpart in the original universe. Known affectionately by fans as “Gappy”, he’s an unusual amalgamation of two other characters, Josefumi Kujo and Yoshikage Kira. Born close to the enigmatic Wall Eyes, Gappy possesses a unique Stand called Soft & Wet, which enables him to create bubbles that can take specific characteristics from objects or people. In contrast to his unusual origins, Gappy shares some traits with the original Josuke, as he’s also a valiant young man who uses his powers to safeguard his town and his adopted family against the danger posed by the Rock Humans.

6. Yoshikage Kira

Yoshikage Kira And Jotaro Kujo’s Counterpart

  • Debut: Diamond Is Unbreakable and Stardust Crusaders (Originals), JoJolion (Counterpart)

In Diamond is Unbreakable, the story introduced an outstanding antagonist named Yoshikage Kira. He was a chilling murderer with an unusual fixation on hands, who utilized his ability called Killer Queen to transform his victims into explosives that he could destroy without leaving any trace of his gruesome actions, thereby solidifying him as one of the most memorable and emblematic villains in the entire saga. This concept, though grim, was remarkably creative and significant.

In the series JoJolion, there’s a major character named Yoshikage Kira, who stands in stark contrast to his namesake. This Kira is more aggressive and peculiar, but unlike his murderous counterpart, he was a heroic marine surgeon. He employed his unique version of Killer Queen not for killing, but to assist his mother in saving lives at the hospital. It’s essential to note that he was an alternate universe version of Jotaro Kujo, as they both shared cold and aloof personalities, and their mothers were both called Holy. Regrettably, Kira met his end in the fight against the Rock Humans, and half of his body merged with Josefumi’s to create the character known as Josuke Higashikata.

5. Holy Joestar-Kira

Holy Kujo’s Counterpart

  • Debut: Stardust Crusaders (Original), JoJolion (Counterpart)

The pivotal event that sparked the events of Stardust Crusaders was when Jotaro’s mother, Holy Kujo, fell sick due to her lack of ability to handle her newly manifested Stand. Consequently, her father and son embarked on a lengthy voyage with the goal of eliminating Dio, which would deactivate her stand and potentially save her life. It’s worth noting that although Holy didn’t actively participate in the story, she still played an essential role within it.

In the series known as JoJolion, a character named Dr. Holy Joestar-Kira is introduced. She’s the mother of Yoshikage Kira and continues to be seen as such by Gappy even after his second rebirth. This renowned doctor finds herself in the hospital due to some perplexing disappearances of her organs and sections of her brain, a situation later explained as being caused by the Rock Human’s experiments involving the Locacaca fruit. Much like in the original universe, the main plot of JoJolion centers around Josuke seeking revenge for his mother while simultaneously searching for a viable cure for her illness.

4. Yasuho Hirose

Koichi Hirose’s Counterpart

  • Debut: Diamond Is Unbreakable (Original), JoJolion (Counterpart)

In the series “Diamond is Unbreakable,” Kosichi Hirose, a kind and heroic young man, emerged as one of Josuke’s trusted companions. This amiable character, who was well-liked for his friendliness and courage, grew so close to Josuke that even Jotaro Kujo, a notable character himself, acknowledged his reliability. It was this trustworthiness that earned Koichi a spot in the next installment, “Vento Aureo,” which took place in Italy.

In the universe of JoJolion, instead of having a companion similar to Koichi, Josuke had Yasuho Hirose by his side. Their bond was unique, though. Throughout the story, Yasuho, a kind and intelligent young lady, assisted Gappy in numerous ways. Over time, their friendship deepened into something more romantic. Interestingly, she proved to be just as dependable and helpful as Koichi, which made her one of the franchise’s most well-written female characters.

3. Joseph Joestar

Joseph Joestar’s Counterpart

  • Debut: Battle Tendency (Original), JoJolion (Counterpart)

Without a shadow of a doubt, it’s evident that I find myself among the key figures in the original realm of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. As a charismatic and mischievous individual, I was the central character in Battle Tendency, but my significant roles in both Stardust Crusaders and Diamond is Unbreakable have solidified my status as an iconic fan favorite. This is why I hold a special place in the hearts of many fans, and it’s not hard to see why.

In the new universe, though Joseph Joestar didn’t have a full-length storyline of his own, he significantly influenced the overall narrative due to his role in an intriguing flashback titled “the Radio Gaga Incident.” Often referred to as Fumi, this version of Joseph was a Japanese youth who crossed paths with Lucy Steel during her visit to Morioh in 1941. This unusual encounter led him to accompany her to America, where he encountered Suzi Q and started a family with her, having two daughters together.

2. Jodio Joestar

Giorno Giovanna’s Counterpart

  • Debut: Vento Aureo (Original), The JOJOLands (Counterpart)

In the original universe, Vento Aureo is known for showcasing an exceptionally unique main character, as Giorno Giovanna is revealed to be the son of Dio Brando. This occurs when Dio was in possession of Jonathan’s body. Due to his peculiar ancestry, Giorno emerged as a morally ambiguous protagonist who assumed control over an entire criminal organization and spared no cruelty towards his adversaries.

In the latest installment of “JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure,” titled “The JOJOLands,”, a young outlaw named Jodio Joestar takes center stage. Although it hasn’t been confirmed yet if he is connected to Diego Brando in any way, the inclusion of “Dio” in his name hints that he could be an alternate version of Giorno. They share similar ruthless personalities but have starkly distinct Stands: Gold Experience granted Giorno the ability to bring life to inanimate objects, whereas November Rain empowers Jodio to summon intense rainstorms capable of crushing his foes.

1. Rohan Kishibe

Kishibe Rohan’s Counterpart

  • Debut: Diamond Is Unbreakable (Original), The JOJOLands (Counterpart)

Rohan Kishibe is a notable figure within the universe of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, despite not being a villain or related to the Joestar family. He’s an ostentatious and proud manga artist who ventures globally for research purposes, and he also possesses the unique ability to transform people into books using his versatile stand, Heaven’s Door. It’s worth mentioning that Rohan is one of Hirohiko Araki’s favorite characters, and he has even headlined his own spin-off series titled Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan.

Fans of JoJo were equally startled and thrilled to discover that the second universe includes a character identical to Rohan Kishibe, who significantly impacted the early chapters of The JOJOLands. Remarkably, this version’s appearance, character traits, and “Stand” are almost indistinguishable from the original Rohan. Interestingly, he is the least altered counterpart in the series to date. This isn’t too surprising, given that Araki had no reason to modify one of his most iconic and cherished creations.
