As an observer, I can’t help but appreciate the widespread acclaim for the manga-turned-anime titled “Fire Force,” which made its debut in 2019. This contemporary battle shonen has managed to captivate audiences with a richly layered universe of characters and values. The backdrop is set 250 years after a catastrophic fire that engulfed Earth; since then, mysterious cases of spontaneous human combustion have been reported in the Tokyo Empire, transforming humans into fiery beings. The narrative primarily revolves around the escapades of the 8th Special Fire Brigade and their latest recruit, Shinra Kusakabe.
In the captivating setting ideal for a shonen battle series, Fire Force offers exceptional action sequences, creative world-building, fascinating powers, and smooth animation. What truly sets it apart is its collection of entertaining characters. While the main characters in Fire Force may not reach iconic status like the Straw Hats, they are still quite compelling. Here’s some essential information about the show’s characters: Shinra, for instance, is a young and determined fire soldier, while Tamaki, the younger sister of the Special Fire Force Company 8 captain, has a birthday that we learn throughout the series.
Shinra Kusakabe
Fire Force Protagonist & Member Of Company 8
- Age: 17
- Height: 5’8″ (173 cm)
- Birthday: October 29th
- Japanese Voice Actor: Gakuto Kajiwara
- English Voice Actor: Derick Snow
In the narrative of Fire Force, Shin Inferno Kusakabe, the latest addition to the 8th Special Fire Brigade, serves as the primary character. Endowed with a remarkable ability that allows him to generate fire from his soles, Shinra is a third-generation pyrokinetic. Throughout the series, he earns the moniker “Demon” because of the ominous smile that frequently adorns his face and the enigmatic nature of his powers.
Beware not to be fooled by his smile; Shinra Kusakabe, being one of the youngest members, still has much to learn. Nevertheless, viewers will relish each step of Shinra’s journey as he discovers new abilities (beyond his usual kick-centric fighting style) on his path towards becoming a hero.
Besides being renowned for it, Shinra’s history also includes a heart-wrenching tale about his family. Regrettably, not much detail is available regarding his father. However, 12 years prior to the storyline in Fire Force, an enigmatic incident took the lives of Shinra’s mother and brother. The central theme of his journey throughout the anime centers on unraveling the secrets behind these tragic events.
Akitaru Obi
Special Fire Force Company 8 Captain
- Age: 31
- Height: 6’2″ (189 cm)
- Birthday: March 27th
- Japanese Voice Actor: Kazuya Nakai
- English Voice Actor: Jeremy Inman
In every tale’s military unit, each brigade boasts a captivating commander. Among them, Akitaru Obi serves as the commanding officer for the 8th Special Fire Brigade. As a leader, Obi inspires his troops with his compelling charm and tenacity.
Initially, one of two characters in the anime lacked the ability to control fire, but viewers should not be fooled by this. Despite this limitation, Commander Obi demonstrates remarkable super-strength, swiftly overpowering those with pyrokinetic abilities. Due to his unwavering resolve, Akitaru Obi later collaborated with his friend Takehisa Hinawa to establish the 8th Special Fire Brigade before the storyline of “Fire Force” unfolded.
Takehisa Hinawa
Special Fire Force Company 8 Lieutenant
- Age: 28
- Height: 5’11” (180 cm)
- Birthday: September 23rd
- Japanese Voice Actor: Kenichi Suzumura
- English Voice Actor: Chris Wehkamp
In the realm of Fire Force, a sophisticated system maintains the equilibrium of fire powers, where second generations act as regulators for existing flames and third-generation individuals initiate new ones. One of the earliest second-generation characters introduced to viewers is Hinawa; he utilizes guns to ignite sparks, thus enabling his abilities.
Captain Takehisa from the 8th Brigade skillfully employs his military background to manage battlefield operations. Yet, beneath his stern exterior lies a heart full of kindness, with a fondness for peculiar headgear, cooking, and safeguarding his comrades within the 8th Brigade. Interestingly, Takehisa serves as a calming influence on the impetuous Commander Akitaru Obi, frequently resorting to intimidation tactics to maintain order among his troops.
Maki Oze
Special Fire Force Company 8 Unit Leader
- Age: 19
- Height: 5’6″ (167 cm)
- Birthday: September 16th
- Japanese Voice Actor: Saeko Kamijou
- English Voice Actor: Sarah Roach
Additionally, Maki Oze, who hails from a military-connected family, serves in the army alongside Hinawa. At Hinawa’s suggestion, she enlisted in the 8th Special Fire Brigade, demonstrating her unique ability to manipulate fire over great distances as a second-generation fire user.
In the captivating series, Fire Force, Maki’s appearance conceals a powerful and endearing female character, both physically and emotionally. Time and again, Maki uses her magical fire powers to shield her fellow brigadiers. Maki is renowned for her past with Takehisa Hinawa, a former military member like herself, prior to the formation of the 8th Special Fire Brigade. Despite being linked to a high-ranking military figure, it was Takehisha who brought Maki into the 8th Special Fire Brigade, making her the third recruit for this elite team in Fire Force.
Iris
Special Fire Force Company 8 Member (Sister)
- Age: 16
- Height: 5′ (154 cm)
- Birthday: April 10th
- Japanese Voice Actor: Mao Ichimichi
- English Voice Actor: Alexis Tipton
In the animated series “Fire Force,” the Sacred Sun Temple plays a significant role, offering clergy members – including nuns and priests – who are specially trained to guide fire-afflicted individuals toward their next life. Iris is one such nun hailing from the Sacred Sun Temple, sharing a common trait with Commander Obi as they both lack special abilities.
Nevertheless, Iris exhibits remarkable tenacity in her profession, displaying more courage and passion for her work than many other characters in the anime. Despite her limited skills, she bravely participates in the 8th Brigade on the battlefield, starting fights with a prayer for the well-being of her enemies’ team.
In the anime “Fire Force”, Iris’ behavior is significantly shaped by a traumatic event from her childhood, which was the burning down of the convent she resided in. This shared experience with Captain Hibina of the 5th Special Fire Brigade, caused by the emergence of people who can ignite at will, plays a crucial role in Iris’ storyline within the series.
Arthur Boyle
Special Fire Force Company 8 Member
- Age: 17
- Height: 5’8″ (174 cm)
- Birthday: July 10th
- Japanese Voice Actor: Yūsuke Kobayashi
- English Voice Actor: Eric Vale
Following close behind Shinra in our 8th Brigade, there’s me – Arthur Boyle, a plasma-wielder who jumped on board not long after him. You see, we both went through our training together and ever since joining the team, we’ve been inseparable during missions. We’re third-generation fire users, so people might say we have a special bond – some would even call it a frenemy dynamic!
Among the innovative personalities of the 8th Special Fire Brigade, Arthur Boyle perceives himself as a “noble monarch-knight” and those he rescues as his faithful subjects. In true knightly fashion, Arthur consistently employs his reliable plasma sword to safeguard both his comrades and civilians alike.
Tamaki Kotatsu
Special Fire Force Company 1 & 8 Member
- Age: 17
- Height: 5’1″ (156 cm)
- Birthday: February 22nd
- Japanese Voice Actor: Yuuki Aoi
- English Voice Actor: Jad Saxton
As I delved deeper into the captivating world of Fire Force, it wasn’t until the 8th company that Tamaki Kotatsu joined the scene. Initially, she wasn’t one of the main characters; instead, her journey began in the 1st Special Fire Brigade, only making an appearance later on when she was transferred from another company, enriching the narrative as the anime unfolded.
Besides being a third-generation fire wielder similar to Shinra and Arthur, Tamaki Kotatsu also possesses special traits. Upon igniting her flames, she transforms with cat-like characteristics and boosted durability. Moreover, Tamaki’s resistance to fire is exceptionally high, having come to the rescue of herself and her comrades on numerous instances. Known for her likeable demeanor in most situations, Tamaki Kotatsu is particularly renowned for her “Lucky Lecher Lure,” a habit that frequently lands her in awkward, fanservice-focused predicaments – often during intense scenes, causing division among fans due to their frequency and timing.
Viktor Licht
Special Fire Force Company 8 Scientist
- Age: 23
- Height: 6’1″ (187 cm)
- Birthday: March 14th
- Japanese Voice Actor: Daisuke Sakaguchi
- English Voice Actor: Ian Sinclair
In the “Fire Force” anime, Victor Licht, who leads the chemistry and research department in the 8th Brigade, portrays a character shrouded in mystery. Working closely with an intriguing anti-hero known as Joker, viewers are left guessing whether Victor Licht is truly loyal to the 8th Brigade or secretly working for other factions.
Regardless, Viktor plays a crucial role in the primary group, employing his intelligence to tackle significant events. Being devoid of special powers, Viktor relies on strategy and scientific knowledge to coordinate other power-users to put out even the largest blazes.
Vulcan Joseph
Special Fire Force Company 8 Engineer (Former)
- Age: 18
- Height: 5’10” (178 cm)
- Birthday: April 18th
- Japanese Voice Actor: Taku Yashiro
- English Voice Actor: Jason Liebrecht
Beyond their research division, each Special Fire Brigade also includes a technology department dedicated to upkeep and innovation. Specifically for the 8th Special Fire Brigade, this role is filled by Vulcan Joseph, a highly skilled young professional with a knack for robotics.
As the story progresses, viewers will find themselves captivated by the character’s connection to Tokyo Empire’s past, along with his remarkable character traits. With deep roots in the mechanical sector within the Empire, Vulcan strives to preserve his family legacy and restore Earth before catastrophe strikes; a character that sci-fi anime enthusiasts will surely appreciate.
Hibana
Special Fire Force Company 5 Captain
- Age: 20
- Height: 5’65” (169 cm)
- Birthday: March 3rd
- Japanese Voice Actor: Lynn
- English Voice Actor: Colleen Clinkenbeard
In essence, though not officially a part of the 8th Brigade, Hibana spends such a significant amount of time with Shinra and his companions that she functions as if she were an honorary member. During their time at the nunnery, Hibana served as a mentor to Iris, but her obsession with uncovering the reason behind human combustion led her to conduct cruel experiments in pursuit of this knowledge. Initially portrayed as Fire Force’s primary antagonist, Hibina undergoes a dramatic change following her defeat at Shinra’s hands, transforming into a trusted ally of Special Fire Force Company 8.
As a passionate fan, I’d say it’s no secret that Hibana, in the captivating world of Fire Force, is one of my favorite female characters. She’s an intriguing blend of power and intellect, making her a thrilling participant in combat scenes, yet her scientific knowledge adds depth to the narrative beyond the heat of battle. With a dramatic past that shrouds her in mystery and a knack for finding herself in perilous situations, Hibana manages to keep things interesting with her infectious humor.
