Shortly after starting the game Xenoblade Chronicles X, players will find themselves with the opportunity to name their newly created character. Players can choose any name they prefer, but some might ponder if there’s a specific choice that aligns best with the game’s canon. This guide aims to clarify that matter by providing information about the names that are widely recognized as the most official for the player character in Xenoblade Chronicles X.
For the sake of clarity, we’ll refer to the player character as the primary figure throughout this guide, although technically speaking, they might not be the absolute central protagonist of the game.
Xenoblade Chronicles X: What is the Protagonist’s Canon Name?
Cross
In Xenoblade Chronicles X, the player character doesn’t have a universally accepted name, but the community often calls them “Cross.” This nickname isn’t solely derived from the Japanese title, which translates to Xenoblade Cross, as it also surfaces in promotional content on two separate occasions.
For the first time, the name Cross became associated with the main character of the game during a Nintendo Direct presentation in November 2014, prior to the release of Xenoblade Chronicles X on the Wii U. Intriguingly, during this broadcast, the game’s user interface disclosed that the player character had been named “クロス,” which translates to “cross” in Japanese.
The second occurrence took place when a Japanese trailer for Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition was launched. Once more, it became evident that the main character had been designated as ‘Cross’ in this video, which further fueled speculation among fans that ‘Cross’ is indeed the most official name for the player character.
Ryan

Although you may not often come across the community using the term “Ryan” for the player character, it’s worth noting that this name does appear in promotional material. Specifically, in the English version of the Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition trailer, you can see the interface which clearly displays the name “Ryan”.
Naming the Player Character in Xenoblade Chronicles X
Players aren’t required to name their main character Cross (or Ryan), or create a male protagonist just because promotional materials do. Instead, players are encouraged to choose names and genders that resonate with them the most, as they’ll be spending significant time with this character while playing Xenoblade Chronicles X.
